Can you use the Emax II without a floppy?

Can you use the Emax II without a floppy?

2004-10-11 by stephen bennett

Hi all

I use my Emax II basically as a master keyboard these days. However,
the boot floppy drive has become a little flaky. Is there any way to
use the II as a master without the floppy.

I'm assuming not!

Regards

Stephen

Install a hard drive or add on a external storage drive so it can still boot up. The floppy
drive is only necessary if you have no other storage media to boot from.

If your floppy drive is already dead you will need to either get one ready to go (you can
find them on Ebay or you will need to get an external drive like a Zip and get a
preformatted Zip cartridge from someone on the list.

If your drive can work long enough all you need to do is run the format utillity Master 5.

Re: [emax] Can you use the Emax II without a floppy?

2004-10-17 by Micke Askernäs

Hey!

I have some other experience when it comes to this (in fact, its still a
problem for me) ..

I have an Emax, with hard drive, and a bad floppy. The floppy is so bad it
thinks it consttantly has a disk inside it, and thus, the emax won't boot,
since the floppy has higher boot prio.

I have tried to unplug the floppy, both power and the flat cable, but the
machine never gets further than self diagnostics...

Since i have another machine with a working floppy, I have plugged that one
in, and with that floppy drive installed, my Emax boots from its hard drive,
as it should...

Is there any jumpers or anything that one should switch, or should it just be
to unplug the flat cable to the floppy drive?

Effectively, this prevents me from having both emaxes running at the same
time, even though I should have enough "healthy" components...

Any suggestions what to do? ... how should I unplug the drive so the machien
doesnt halt in self diagnostics, or should i just let it run there for a long
time before it realizes there's no floppy at all? ;)

thanks,
Micke

Emax (first one) without floppy...?

2004-10-27 by Micke Askernäs

Hey all!

I have a problem with a faulty floppy drive on one of my machines...
The floppy has a mechanical fault, so it thinks there is a disk in it,
therefor bypassing booting from my zipdrive...

I can bypass it by unplugging the power chord from the floppy AS it is
trying to read from a non existent diskette, but other than that, it is
pretty much stuck..

Also, I've tried disconnecting the floppy from the motherboard, but this
causes the emax to hang in diagnostics mode, and not boot up at all, due to
it not getting any clearance from the floppy drive..

So .. i was wonderinf, is there some way of bypassing the diagnostics mode,
or, search for floppy? It is my guess that it is sending something out to
the floppy and is awaiting a signal in return ... anyone here have any
knowledge about this?

thanks in advance... in worst case i'll have to add a switch on top of the
emax to shut off power to the floppy when it is trying to boot... ;)

decent images of custmized emax...

2004-10-27 by Micke Askernäs

Hey!

here are some decent images of one of the two customized emaxes that i've
modified for live use.

Also figuring, is one of the two APEX keyboard stands with a custom paint job

This is not sorted and there are some 80 pictures, but take a look thrugh
the dark ones with blue light.. all that light is from the emax .. ;)

if you like em or hate em, i'd like to hear your feedback anyway =)

Please bare in mind that when i started working on the two emaxes, both of
them were painted with a brush .... in a grey-green colour, so the menues
and all were already gone.

The menu keys were painted in black rubber paint that was just peeling off,
i managed to get it all off after a bit of work..

One of the machines had a faulty power supply, the other one had no power
supply at all..

This one is the one i've built in another power supply into, and replaced
the old OLD internal harddrive with a ZIPdrive.

Incidentally, it is the very same machine that has the broken floppy drive
i just emailed about ... mechanical fault .. darn floppy thinks there's a
disk in it, so it will not boot ... unless i unplug the floppy during
startup...

anywa, enough ramblings, hope you enjoy the pics!

I believe the "disk in drive" change disk signal goes
down one specific wire in the cable but I can't
remember which.
I suppose you could install a switch.

I remember doing a lab on this in computer repair
school, but it's been several years.

Have you tried putting a blank disk in the drive?
Perhaps it will go to the zip if it can't read the
floppy.

Re: [emax] Emax (first one) without floppy...?

2004-10-28 by Micke Askernäs

Thanks for the tip Bob, unfortunately it keeps on accessing the drive and
returning with the error message that the disk isn't formatted ... regardles
if there is or isnt a floppy in the drive =/

So, my options are:

1. find out what mechanics in the floppy that thinks there is still a disk in
the drive... it is not always hanging, but sometimes it actually manages to
pass through this state, and sees that there is no disk ....

What is it in a floppy that sends a signal "hey, i've got a disk here!" ...
could it be dirty disk headers or something..? .. or is it something
mechanical?

2. see if there is some way of bypassing the floppy check during startup, so
it skips checking for diskdrive in diagnostics mode .... doesnt seem like an
easy option ... (bypass floppy check in some emax bios?)

3. faking the emax with a jumper somewhere that gives the right signal back
to the machine that there is indeed a floppy. sounds like a real tough one...

4. build in an additional switch that cuts the power to the floppy when it
acts up.. this way i can get it to boot and i save some power as well, but
i'd rather not drill another hole in the case

So ... I have options, but I'm working on trying to get #1 fixed... if i cant
do that, i know that option #4 WILL work (works fine to just unplug the power
cable to the floppy when it is being a jerk) but it is a dirty option imho ;)

Any other input and tips on how to get this work?

thanks,
Micke

Sounds like the drive is toast. I recommend getting a
replacement.

Re: [emax] Emax (first one) without floppy...?

2004-10-29 by Micke Askernäs

Well .. i KNOW its toast.. but i dont WANT to get a replacement cause i've
never used it .. =)

I want the darn emax to stop trying to boot from floppy and boot from my
built in zipdrive instead... I cant remove the floppy cause the self
diagnostics never get past the diagnostics screen when booting up .. =)

I dont want to pay what 70$ us, plus shipping to sweden for a component that
i never use and do not need .. ;)

If worst comes to worst, I'll just add a switch that will cut power to the
floppy after self diagnostics screen has passed ... that way it will boot on
my zipdrive instead...

my guess is that it is a mechanical fault with the drive that thinks it has a
disk in it .. if so, it should be fixable so the floppy at least doesnt think
there's a drive in it ... but might not work anyway.. which would be fine...
cause the startup wouldnt halt ;)

Re: [emax] Emax (first one) without floppy...?

2004-10-30 by Micke Askernäs

Hey!

The thing is .. if i change the faulty drive to a working drive i have in my
OTHER emax, my emax boots just fins from the zipdrive as it should...

The disk drive has boot priority, and if there is some way of changing that,
I would be home free.

Since the faulty drive thinks it has a disk inserted, it complains constantly
that there is an unusable disk inserted in the drive, when it is trying to
boot from the floppy (as earlier explained due to malfunction) ...

If i remove the drive altogether, the machine NEVER boots, since it is stuck
in the diagnostics screen.

Also note that this is the original emax .. there might be a different issue
with the emax II .. i have the plus os installed i think .. i'll double check
that... ;)

like i said. in worst case, i have found that if i unplug the power cord when
the drive is trying to access its nonexistent floppy, the boot procedure
continues and the machine boots as it should from zipdrive.

I need the floppy in my other emax as I have no zip, no nothing in that
one .. (yet) ..

Anyone who have a scsi upgrade kit for an emax with version2 of the digital
board? .. according to emulatorarchive, my emax can be modified, i just need
the circuits ;)

You've tried swapping drive cables haven't you?

Re: [emax] Emax (first one) without floppy...?

2004-10-30 by Ted Summers

as far as the HD upgrade- I want one too. Let Route66 Studios know you
are interested. Rob @ Emu Archive earlier decided there wasn't enough
interest to make a kit. Route 66 was looking into maybe doing it also.
I'm willing to pay $100 to get that functionality in mine....

link to route66 is on Emu-archives site...

Thanks,
Ted

Re: [emax] Emax (first one) without floppy...?

2004-11-03 by Micke Askernäs

Hello!

I managed to work around the problem!

I was digging through my old pile of computer components and found an old
floppy drive..
However not fully compatible with the emax, it is compatible *enough* so
the emax acknowledges it as a fully working floppy, and thus boots from zip
as it should...

Just thought i'd mention it .. ;)

//Micke - now with 2 identical emaxes, painted and ready to go on tour...

Re: [emax] Emax (first one) without floppy...?

2004-11-03 by Jens Hellqvist

Hi Micke! Can you tell me what you did? What floppydrive did tou use? I
dropped my emax II in the street after a gig last week, and the floppy
broke down. I also have an Emax I, so I switched the floppies. But now
the emax I isn't working of course... So I would really like to know how
you got around the problem...
