My DX-7 killed my Emax.

My DX-7 killed my Emax.

2006-12-06 by c64izraw

Hello everyone.

I have an odd situation at hand and I'd like some assistance if possible.

The other night I was running my MC-202 off the clock output of my
emax. Things were going pretty good and much to my surprise it worked.
Well when I was done I removed the cable from the MC-202 not thinking
much of it. I turned the MC-202 off and started wrapping the cable
when all of a sudden:

ZZZAP!

Confused (and very worried due to the silence) I looked and the emax
and it stopped running. I looked at the other end of the cable and it
was resting on top of the DX-7. My DX-7 is made of metal. Done.

My MC-202 and DX-7 are completely fine. My emax is dead.

All of the LEDs are on when the unit is powered up, the display has a
solid black bar, and there is no drive activity. I understand this can
mean a million and one things but has anyone had a similar issue and
is there anything I can do to fix / narrow the problem? I tried to
contact EPS electronics for possible repair but I have not heard
anything despite numerous attempts at contact. Are they even still in
business?

I also own an SP-12 Turbo that needs repair. Not sure what the issue
is but the unit powers up fine, the metronome sounds, nothing but a
faint "tick" or "pop" is heard when the pads are struck however and
the sample input display is at 100% volume (black bar).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'd love to get these
units running once again and give 'em a proper home.

I am also going to be posting on other boards as well so apologies for
the possible "cross-posting".

Thanks in advance,
-John

Sounds like you blew the power supply, probably just one side of the voltages, possibly just the fuse which is there to protect such things.

try checking/swapping the fuse, and see if that does it, but it is certainly a power supply thing. should be fixable.

The DX7 case is earthed. The emax was driving its clock output into the
cable whose tip touched the dx7 case (or the tip & sleve both touched
it, similar problem)

So you've got the clock output either shorted to earth, or ground.

Does anyone here know if the emax clock output has any output short
circuit protection?

Can you see the message on the LCD for the SP-12?
If you can, Go to Setup and perform a CLEAR ALL MEMORY,
CLEAR ALL SOUNDS. Check it that brings your sounds back.
When was the last time you changed the battery on the unit?

Hello again everyone.

I cleared the memory and sounds on the sp-12 and still nothing. This
unit functions perfectly but as stated before, there is no sound / the
sample input is at max volume. I also hear a humming noise now that I
test it again.

I checked both fuses on the emax and they look to be complete, ie not
broken. Does this matter and should I still buy new fuses regardless?
Also, if it is a power supply issue what would I have to do to fix it
/ find a new one?

As asked before, what happened to EPS?

Thanks again everyone.

-John

I don't expect it's the power supply that's blown. But I don't know the
circuitry of the clock driver, so haven't got much idea on what is in
line with that output to have blown up....

synth and sampler problems sorted for you ?

2006-12-07 by grahampreston2

Can i make a sugestion?

If you guys have electrical/electronic/general problems with synths
and samplers try joining at

http://www.vintagesynth.com/

They have a great lot of guys on there that will probably sort out
your problems, they have helped me a lot in the past.

There is a Help section where you can post questions on problems and
i bet someone can help sort things out.

Graham

Re: My DX-7 killed my Emax.

well..

I replaced the fuses and it didn't change anything. All the leds still
light and I get the black bar across the screen with no drive activity.

Any suggestions? This doesn't make sense to me.

Thanks again!
