hd formating question

hd formating question

2008-02-04 by gadgetfiddler

Is there a way to partition a 2gb hd so that emax II with format only
540mb or so? I don't mind wasting the unused harddrive space, it would
be well worth it considering it's easier to find a 2gb hd for $5 than a
540mb hd for $20.
I've made a 200mb partition with macdisk but emax still formats for
15min and then gives a hw error.
Any ideas, anyone?

It might be impossible to do that because 2GB drives are post-Emax area.

But here's just an idea, you never know:
Have you tried to create an empty Emax-II Hard disk image with EMXP
(either 96, 239 or 632 MB) and then restore this image to your 2GB hard
disk using your PC ?
The hard disk images created by EMXP are "logically formatted EMAX-II-
ready partitions".
It probably won't work but you never know, maybe the Emax-II will
accept the disk with this image on it...

Some hard drives had a jumper to make them appear no larger than
520MB, so you might need to look up manufacture site in their
archives for the drive and jumper settings. Not all drives did this,
but there were some that did.....

I was trying the 2gb hd because my quantum prodrive lps(1992-2008,
rip) is now deceased. I don't have any hd back-ups on my pc or a cd.
Does someone from the Emax group have enough freetime to upload an
empty hd image to my xdrive?

I'm not sure if I understand your problem...

If you want an empty image you can create one from scratch with EMXP -
you don't need an existing working Emax drive for that.

In EMXP just go to
1. Manage Emu EMAX/EMAXII Images and Disks
 3. Manage Emax HD/CD Images
  3. Create new (blank) Emax-II HD/CD Image

Once you've created the image this way, you can "burn" it to your 2GB
drive using:
1. Manage Emu EMAX/EMAXII Images and Disks
 3. Manage Emax HD/CD Images
  1. Manage existing Emax HD/CD Images
    <select the image you just created><press enter>
    3. Restore Emax HD/CD Image to removable HD

If you want, you can also add an operating system (see files section
or emulatorarchive) to the image before writing it to your HD. That
makes the drive bootable...

Hope this helps.

I've created an image with emxp but emxp says it can't find my scsi
drive. I can access the drive using macdisk, but I don't see it in
windows explorer... what am I missing?

Re: hd formating question

Is the drive listed in Windows Explorer ?
E.g. as a drive G or H or whatever... If so, do you mean that EMXP
gives an error when entering this driveletter ?
But if it is not listed in Windows Explorer, I don't know what you
should do... EMXP at least requires that Windows sees a drive. Until
now I only worked with removable drives, which means there's always a
drive letter assigned but not necessarily a disk in the drive.
But if the HD is fixed and not formatted for windows, perhaps Windows
doesn't see the drive and doesn't assign a drive letter to it (while
MacDisk recognizes it via the scsi bus scan...).
By the way: I assume you have a scsi driver on Windows installed :-) ?

If you find another way of writing "raw data" directly to a harddisk,
you can try it, e.g. maybe on a mac computer. EMXP is not really
required to write the image to the disk, any "raw writing" utility
can do it, also on mac. Unfortunately I don't know such tools for mac.

Re: hd formating question

I partitioned and formatted the drive, it shows in windows explorer
and emxp recognises it now, but emxp says the disk is too
small...???
I used winhex to write the data from a .em2 file to the hd and I
still get "not emax II drive"...
I guess it's time for ebay. Thanks for your help esythesis(emax
guru).
