Is it possible to convert Emax sound discs to other sampler formats?

Is it possible to convert Emax sound discs to other sampler formats?

2008-11-25 by reshad

I recently bought the original Emax and it came with a large amount of
sound discs. After using the unit, I realized that something is wrong
with it. Whenever I play the keys or mess with the wheels, the sounds
all come out glitchy and distorted. It's hard to describe, but I know
the machine is not supposed to do this. The character of the sound
changes horribly and sometimes the pitch wheel does not respond.

I have a few sampler/drum machines and I was wondering if it's
possible to convert the Emax sounds to ASRX/MPC2000xl/RolandMV8000
formats. Either one of these formats will do.

Someone told me that the Kurzweil K2500 will load up the emu discs,
but I do not have the cash to spend on one of those nor another Emax.
Chicken Systems offers a translator, but I would like to know how well
it works before giving up $80 for it.

Any help would be appreciated and thank you for your time.

the wheel the information is sampled and sent to the multiplexer which
turns the digital information into voltages to control the filters
response if the caps are down then they dont perform well and you can
get mismatched voltages making havoc with the vca and filter ic,s does
it do it on every channel

have you tried using the separate outs and seeing which one is causing
the glitching

if it from every channel then it could be the echip have you checked
the the voltage to the chip some of the chips produced was not up to
scratch so emu rather than dumping the batch they added a trim pot to
vary the incoming voltage input to each of the echips

if its the echip gone then the synth is buggard as you cant get the
chip with out scavenging another machine

If you can't fix the Emax, and want to translate your emax banks to
one of your three other sampler units, I guess Chickensys Translator
will be the only option... but you'll need a workaround: Translator
does not fully support Emax-I (although this is not clearly mentioned
on their website). So what you would have to do is use EMXP to
translate the Emax banks to EIII banks, put them on an EIII
cdrom/disk image, and use that as the import format for Translator
which hopefully will convert them to ASRX, MV8000 or MPC...

If you only want to convert the actual sounds (without
preset/voice/sample parameters) you can of course simply extract the
Emax samples to WAV with EMXP and load these WAVs in your other
sampler (I assume at least one of them supports WAV, the Roland for
instance)

I would be really surprised if the K2500 would support Emax disks.
Perhaps EIII, but Emax ???

Anyway the best option is to have a look into your Emax and solve the
hardware problem !

doesn't EMXP convert to S1000 images? i think that might be the best bet
since most samplers (including the K2000, K2500) will load S1000 samples.

Re: Is it possible to convert Emax sound discs to other sampler formats?

Yes it does...
...as long as you can use S1000 floppy disks in the targetsampler.
If the targetsampler needs S1000 cdroms or S1000 removable harddisks,
you would have to put the S1000 programs and samples created by EMXP
on an S1000 compatible CDROM/HD first. And this is not supported by
EMXP because I couldn't figure out the harddisk layout of Akai yet.
And as far as I know there is not a lot of other software out there
(maybe none ?) which can do this job. (anyone ?)
As a workaround I used to use my S1000HD sampler for this purpose: I
loaded the floppy disk created by EMXP and saved the contents to a
ZIP disk connected to the SCSI port of the S1000HD.

I can confirm that the K2500 does not support reading any Emu disk formats. However, it will read various Akai, Roland and Ensoniq formats.
