Maybe someone on the list can help me here.

So I got a new floppy drive working (thanks Ted) on my Emax and I'm *just*
now getting around to using EMXP and loading up presets.  It's a Teac Slim
Floppy and looks pretty slick in the rack as it matches somewhat closely the
color of the Emax Chassis.  I've got room for another 3.5" drive and was
going to put a Zip100 in only to find out that they are a fraction wider
than the slot I have to work with.  Ugh.  (anyone else run into problems
mounting a Zip100 drive per it's width?).

Anyways, my question that is bothering me at the moment::

Is it possible that a few of the voices could go out on these?  I seem to
have limited polyphony on mine (although I haven't confirmed this 100% as
I'm not using my own presets and there could be layered samples).  Anyways I
checked and none of the voices are disabled in the Master section, and
nothing distorts...  it just seems like I'm not getting 8 note polyphony.
Any insight from the group?  I definitely need to test this for sure with a
preset that uses 1 sample only mono.

Maybe you have the chorus turned on in the presets.  It uses voices.

that could be... but it's like this on all the presets.  i had the bank
called Synth Factory loaded up and i couldn't get any preset to play 8
voices (seemed like most i could play 3 voices at once at the most).

i guess what i should do is make a preset that i know only uses one sample
w/ chorus turned off and then see...

okay, i've confirmed now that i'm only getting 3 note polyphony.  loaded up
my own sample, not a dual voice preset, no chorus, and if i play more than
three notes, voices start to get cut off.

what could be causing this??  on the EIII i used to own there was one voice
out but it would distort and i just turned it off under the disable channel
function.  on my Emax there are NO channels disabled.  this is really
strange because it's not VCO's so how the hell could FIVE voice be out????

if anyone has any insight it would mean a lot.  i'm hoping this is something
trivial.

(this might be what i get for buying an emax for cheap on Ebay)

Another idea might be if those ICs are socketed on the analog board,  
to move a working voice to a non-working section and see if that voice  
now works.
That might help determine if it is an IC.

Just a thought, I don't have my Emax apart, so I am just guessing.....

Thanks Jammie...

BTW, Is the smp08 a replacement for *both* the VCA/VCF IC *and* the sample
and hold chip?  Is the VCA/VCF and sample/hold all on one IC?  I'm not a
tech....

If it's the decoupling caps that would be cool because that would probably
be the cheapest/easiest fix.

If it's the E chip then I'm looking for another Emax dead or alive....

  right there are 4 2300 sample and hold multiplexers they have 8  
  channels 1 for each voice of polyphony 1 2300 deals with the filter
  cut off envelope 1 2300 deals with the vca envelope 
  1 2300 deals with the resonance setting 
  and the last deals with the panning control 

  a digital signal is sent to the sample and hold via binary this
tells the 2300 which channel and what voltage it needs to be this
voltage is then held and sent to the filter or function that it
performs the digital signal is changed to analog voltage and is
scanned and held at intervals this is micro processor controlled  and 
 is 0-5v .

 the smp08 is a new ic made by analog devices and is pin for pin
compatible its slew rate is a lot faster than the 2300 and is less
power hungry 

now because the sample and holds deal with the voices it could be that
some of the channels are not sending the right voltage it could be
sending 0v instead of 2v or what ever voltage it is supposed to be

 now 0v on the filter envelope would give your filter 0 cutoff you
would get no audible sound 

 if it was the vca envelope it would be the same ov would give you 
 no volume

 the resonance setting 0v means no resonance 

 the pan function uses 0v would give you full pan left

 this would be for the stereo outs

 now have you checked the separate outs
