Hallo to the Emax community

Hallo to the Emax community

2009-08-03 by midimal_music

Glad to have found this buzzing community after owning an emax for many years.I'm now in the process of looking into whether I can SCSI up my Emax 1 SE which is something I've thought about doing a few times but was previously thwarted due to it not having the 5380 chip.I'm hoping this can be solved now with a kit from Ted Summers.

I also need a back light and was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of obtaining one, specific part number ? I saw an HD44780 20X4 Character LCD Display with LED backlight on ebay and was wondering if I could use that?

Thanks for any advice on this.

no you cant but be wary i had a back light from the german company and the cathode and anode was backwards so it shon on the wrong side

he told me to turn it round but i now that it dont work that way and i did as he said and it did not light at all

i changed mine to a led but the problem is that its 7 mm bigger and so you dave to extend all the buttons so that they fit the panel i also had to extend the pins for the volume and data sliders

thanks for your reply jammie,i realize i should have done my research a bit better before asking that backlight question.

acctually i remembered i had a backlight (just the plastic strip part) that i orderd some time ago from a guy in canada... and have had a similar experience to you trying to fit it. it lights up nice and blue but that's it, blank.......everything else sounds like it's working ok, disc loads up etc, just wondering how to proceed from here....???

Wait there is a contrast knob? Wow!

Do you have to remove the PCB to get at it, or is there a trimmer hole?

Thanks Jammie!

you have to remove the front panel pcb to access the trim pot its a shame that they never added it in software or add a trimpot nob on the front you can change it to a longer nob contol but would have to drill front panel

On mine, beneath where the backlight is mounted onto the pcb, it reads "In case of emergency break glass!"

On mine, beneath where the backlight is mounted onto the pcb, it reads "In case of emergency break glass!"

Re: Hallo to the Emax community

Just point that not all emaxes have that trimmer for lcd contrast. I have got two Version 2 Rev C boards, one of those has the pot, and the other has just a fixed resistance.

Regarding the backlight, it is an Electroluminiscent sheet. I've bought it in an electronics dealer and did mine. I've fixed my three emaxes backlight and now they shine as new. (electronics skill required for this, there are lot of volts under the screen for the EL sheet.

Thanks for the info,

As the backlight PCB on my emax doesn't seem to have the trimmer could anyone suggest why I'm not getting any characters on the backlight when I turn the unit on. As I wrote before-it lights up fine.

Do the specifications on these electroluminescent sheets vary and could it be I've received and fitted the wrong type ?

Thanks

Bob

Re: [emax] Re: Hallo to the Emax community

2009-08-10 by jammie

there is no glass on the back light the back light is a el strip it works of a 100 vac around about 400hz frequency

if you need a glass thats the lcd you have to replace the lcd circuit board as its non repairable if it cracks or smashed or scratched it needs changing

you have to be very carefull when putting in a el strip becuase it can scratch the lcd under surface

there is no glass on the back light the back light is a el strip it works of a 100 vac around about 400hz frequency

if you need a glass thats the lcd you have to replace the lcd circuit board as its non repairable if it cracks or smashed or scratched it needs changing

you have to be very carefull when putting in a el strip becuase it can scratch the lcd under surface

Thanks

Just point that not all emaxes have that trimmer for lcd contrast. I have got two Version 2 Rev C boards, one of those has the pot, and the other has just a fixed resistance.

Regarding the backlight, it is an Electroluminiscent sheet. I've bought it in an electronics dealer and did mine. I've fixed my three emaxes backlight and now they shine as new. (electronics skill required for this, there are lot of volts under the screen for the EL sheet.

there is no glass on the back light the back light is a el strip it works of a 100 vac around about 400hz frequency

if you need a glass thats the lcd you have to replace the lcd circuit board as its non repairable if it cracks or smashed or scratched it needs changing

you have to be very carefull when putting in a el strip becuase it can scratch the lcd under surface

  Thanks

Just point that not all emaxes have that trimmer for lcd contrast. I have got two Version 2 Rev C boards, one of those has the pot, and the other has just a fixed resistance.

Regarding the backlight, it is an Electroluminiscent sheet. I've bought it in an electronics dealer and did mine. I've fixed my three emaxes backlight and now they shine as new. (electronics skill required for this, there are lot of volts under the screen for the EL sheet.
