Hi all, Here's my latest song: http://alonetone.com/danielb/tracks/imaginary-friend Most of it is Emax II, and there are two parts played on the Roland Jx-8P. It be very interested to hear what you think of it. Thanks, Daniel [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Since you asked! To my ears it sounds a bit too minimal. And too much like Depeche Mode. Or some other early 80s dreary band. I don't find it too dreary though, but mostly minimal. Sounds like only a 6X recording? I would recommend (just for production's sake) adding some big accent-or-supporting sounds covered in reverb in the background to give it some depth in the 7th and 8th tracks. The keyboard sounds themselves are alright but the drums sound DIY style. Nothing wrong with using more expensive sounding drum samples (it will sound more "produced" and after all that is how producers make all that money). The concept was fine, I don't have a problem with the vocals, the song, or the story. But the drums need to swing a bit more (even before quantization control we had ways to simulate "feel"). Don't be afraid to put an SM-57 in front of some egg shakers or something. This review was intended to give you some useful feedback, not in any way to criticize. I didn't get an Emax to sound like DM, but rather to have, essentially, a Fairlight. I've had many wonderful production excesses with it with that in mind. That may not be your cup of tea, I understand. Experiment! Anyway, I enjoyed your song. --- In emax@yahoogroups.com, "Daniel Baum" <daniel@...> wrote:

Thanks. Last time i used the Emax in a piece of music, I used Jamstix for the drums. This time I wanted to get a certain sound - kind of Depeche Modish Emulator II - as you said, and of course this will sound a bit simple so some people. Other than the drums, BTW, I sampled all of the sounds myself. Believe it or not, they are all vocoder sounds from my Korg Radias, including the bass. Thanks for taking the time to write this useful criticism. If/when I do another version of the song, I'll certainly take it into account. Daniel

Sorry but I don't hear Depeche mode in this track, it sounds original to the artist. I think the vocals need a bit of craft, other tan that it's cool. [A couple of my messages have not made it to the list, so I am sending this via the web. Apologies in advance if they eventually arrive mor ethan once.] Hi, Thanks! I have in the past been guilty of sounding too much like Depeche Mode, but this time, I agree, it does have a bit of an individual sound to it. Anyway, I DID buy my Emax to sound like DM :) I have uploaded a new version, with improved vocal timing; it was pretty shoddy in places. The link is the same: http://alonetone.com/danielb/tracks/imaginary-friend D.

Hey D, I think this is very tight! I don't know much about DM since I haven't really followed them since my old punk band did DM covers back in the early 80s. But I think you definitely have an individual vocal style and this recording sounded very nice. Might also be "my imagination" but it sounded like you remixed the balance of some things to make it sound more commercially viable (which I liked). Putting FX on snare is always good, and I also liked the middle eight synth sound used throughout - maybe you boosted it or put more verb on it, I don't know. Anyway, whatever you did it's working. Good job! --- In emax@yahoogroups.com, "dbaum0000" <daniel@...> wrote:

Hi, Thanks very much. Apart from tightening up the vocals (isn't it amazing what you can do with a modern DAW?), the only change I made was to increase the reverb level. Since several tracks were being sent to the same reverb, this is subtle, but quite noticeable. D. --- In emax@yahoogroups.com, "Wind" <sanctifiedone@...> wrote:

Hey Daniel, First, major applause for completing something you feel happy enough with to put out there. Second any crtisims should be taken as trying to help. And keep in mind I feel this is better than most the shit that is on the charts right now. But speaking of the charts, maybe you should add some auto-tune effect on your voice. I'm sure you would chart right now. . . What are you going for with the track? What place, what atmosphere do you want me to be in, or what feeling do you have or want to envoke from the song? Just some thoughts: Structure: I would hold the drum intro to 4 measures assumine 4/4 time signature (16 beats) to establish the rythmn and perhaps bring in the synth bass on the 2nd measure. Next I would layer in one or two of your next tracks over the next 4 measures and bring the vocals in at the start of the 9th measure. The ending around 3:40-3:43 actually would sound really great at the end of your bridge before droping right back into the chorus. Lyrics: It is my feeling that I'm being beat over the head with my "imginary friend". Try to go back an replace imaginary friend with a descriptive smilie or metaphore, or an event that foreshadows your imaginary friend as this cop out or priority in people's life. Effects: The bass could use some glissandro or a slight susstain to round off the edges just slightly. Also, have you tried raising the bass an octave higher? It sounds really low without the punch and this sometimes occurs on bass samples that are being played too low. Some EQ on the bass could make it fill out a little also, or layer a real bass sound in there. It made me think of Body Pop and a bit Joy Division so I think it is in line with exactly what you were going for. Keep it up! -patrick ________________________________

Hi Patrick, First of all, apologies for taking a long time to reply to your post. Also, thanks for taking the time to listen to my song and producing such a comprehensive list of suggestions. >First, major applause for completing something you feel happy enough with >to put out there. I'm pretty sure you were joking about this, but I went ahead and did it anyway. I used Reaper's own built-in autotune effect. It is not too dominant, and I think it does actually sound marginally better. I'd be very happy to hear what you think of the result: http://alonetone.com/danielb/tracks/imaginary-friend >What are you going for with the track? What place, what atmosphere do you >want me to be in, or what >feeling do you have or want to envoke from the >song? I wanted it to sound kind of dark and forbidding. I probably shouldn't mention Depeche Mode yet again in connection with this song, but it will give you the general idea The actual inspiration for the basic sound came from an Emulator II demo I found on Youtube. That said, all of the sounds except the drums and the JX-8p pad that I used behind the repetition of the first verse are homemade. Just some thoughts: Structure: > The ending around >3:40-3:43 actually would sound really great at the end > of your bridge before droping >right back into the chorus. The flanging sound (actually Roland JX-8p oscillator sync, there's no flanger used), overlaid with the "filter sweep" DX7 sound, actually does recur in empty spaces throughout the track. At the place you mention, it's shortened. Lyrics: >It is my feeling that I'm being beat over the head with my "imginary >friend". That's kind of the point. People like the one the song describes can be rather obsessive and talk about their imaginary friends incessantly. >Effects: >The bass could use some glissandro or a slight susstain to round off the >edges just slightly. Hey Daniel, Yea, I was completely joking about the auto-tune shit. I hear a new song with that effect everytime I turn on the radio. I get what you are trying to do lyrically now and it makes sense. It is somewhat like Wrong in its repetition. Anyway I look forward to your next song/album! -patrick ________________________________

Thanks! I did some more editing to the vocals in Imaginary Friend today, so feel free listen if you like. As to my other work; there are another 13 recordings on my site that you are quite welcome to listen to. To get somewhat back on topic, one of them, called "Song of the Sampler" was entirely recorded on my Emax II. As for the future, I'm working on it. . . Regards, D.
