EMAXII errors: "No Presets Exist" and no memory

EMAXII errors: "No Presets Exist" and no memory

2010-08-12 by Lee

Hi,

Has anyone had this issue while booting from CF card in the EMAX II...

I'm using the Acard AEC7720U SCSI-to-IDE bridge, trying a variety of IDE-CF card readers and a variety of CF cards.

All the IDE-CF card readers / adaptors seem to format and boot OK.
Half the CF cards themselves seem to work fine (some have SCSI hardware errors, so I put those to one side and stick to the ones that work - Transcend 2GB for example).

But even though I can format a card and the EMAX II will boot from it, when I then access any menu, the display will read: "No presets exist". When I check the memory, it is full - no space at all to create anything! I can clear the memory and return to the full 8 megs and I can switch to the floppy drive and work from that, so it's this problem is not locking the machine up, and there are no hardware or SCSI errors, just memory issues.

Any help with this would be appreciated,

Thanks.

dont use transcend cards they never work properly with any of the samplers sandisk are the most reliable

it also sounds like you have a os problem or that the os is currupted some how and is causing memry problems

when you clear the memory are you able to access the presets and load banks

Hi,

Thanks for the advice about the Transcend cards. I have some Sandisk and Kingston ones but they kept giving me SCSI hardware or media errors. I will persist with them though. Get a few variations of cards.

Yeah - when I clear the bank, the memory returns to full capacity and I can always load from floppy or from external SCSI Zip.

If I boot from floppy with a bank or create a preset, I can then swap to the internal CF card and save the bank there. It seems to have done it (no error messages)... then - the no memory issue and the lovely "no presets exist" message. I'm using OS 2.14 and will try a few other floppies, just in case the current disk is corrupt, which is may well be. Thanks for pointing that out.

also update the firmware of the scsi to ide reader some have old os and dont work properly with the emaxes

if you ask ted he has the up to date os firm for the acards he will tell you which one works best also

to do this you will need a scsi interface on a computer and a ide device to plug the scsi to ide reader in

In addition to possible corrupt OS, also double check your cables and
termination on the scsi drive.....

Just a thought.

Flaky cable or terminator could cause SCSI H/W errors.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have a few SCSI cables, some short, some long, some with one or more SCSI plugs on the chain.
Will have to check them all. The EmaxII has always served me well. Had one since 1993 with an internal Conner SCSI drive - which still works; but the move to CF card is proving to be challenging!

Re: EMAXII errors: "No Presets Exist" and unable to load banks

2010-09-23 by Lee

Managed to format 2 x 2Gb flash cards and copy across banks from internal hard disk. Downgraded the Acard BIOS from 3.89 to 3.88 then 3.64. The EMAX II will boot from either CF card and will scroll / display the banks on screen but won't load anything. I've tried different SCSI cables and have a spare Acard. All with the same result. The jumpers have a unique SCSI ID (2) and both termination and term power are enabled. I've also tried term power disabled. It cannot be this hard surely?? I've never had any problems with SCSI hard drives, Jaz, Zip or CD-ROMs. Argh!

Re: EMAXII errors: "No Presets Exist" and unable to load banks

2010-09-24 by Lee

Reolved the problem. Seems to have been all the CF cards after all. The only one I've got that works 100 percent is a Calumet ProSpec UDMA 1GB 305x CF card. The following did NOT work well: SanDisk Ultra II 15MB/s 2GB, Trasnscend 2GB 133x, Lexar 512 MB 8x and Kingston 256MB (with the flower on it). Hope this helps anyone else having issues with bootable CF cards in the Emax II.

It is known that "fast" or "high speed" cards do not work in Emax 1 or 2.

Cards that work are Class 2 cards.
Class 4 may have mixed results and Class 6 almost never work, if I recall.

There is a list in a database here on the group of the known working cards.
If you have a working card, please add it to the list.

Regards,
Ted
