problem with internal HD

2011-10-05 by Aivis Mamajevs

Hi, what could be the fault? When I turn on the internal Quantum HD LCD read "not emax2 drive." Trying to format HD LCD read "scsi hardware error". I tried to connect to other HD, but it is the same.
Help please!

Regards,
Aivis

Dear folk, checking your SCSI ID , in EMAX SCSI 0 is reserved to floppy. Checking your default SCSI HD ID, must be 1 to 7.

Put terminator jumper on HD if it is in the end of SCSI chain.

In case you use a SCSI chain disconect other devices letting alone HD and tr y to format.

Emax OS won't start from removable media HD.

That isn't entirely true.
While it is correct that on Emax 2 the SCSI ID cannot be 0 for the HD, I have Emax 1 and Emax 2 BOTH with SD card media and it boots from them.

If you have set the setting for SCSI ID in Emax 2 after booting once from floppy, from there you should be able to boot from that SCSI ID.

The 5380 SCSI controller in Emax is not smart enough to really know that a drive is a removable media or not, from my experience, or research.

Ted

I tried all ways, set a scsi 0 and 1, but nothing changes, Iomega jaz disc and the floppy disc can be formatted, but HD not. What other options are?

You are setting the physical jumpers on the drive to 1 and then booting from
floppy and changing to ID 1 in the Emax2 menu, right?

Because if you do one without doing both, then it will never work.

One jamper imposed on 1, and the other on the 5. This is IBM 540MB disc.

I would need to have a pic or exact detail of the jumpers and the drive
model to specifically verify you have the setting you expect.

Ted

pictures cannot be sent to the Emax group directly, you either have to
upload them to the files section or send them directly to a group member
email.

pictures cannot be sent to the Emax group directly, you either have to
upload them to the files section or send them directly to a group member
email.

You need to move that jumper over to JP6.

According to the website here:
http://www.4drives.com/DRIVESPECS/IBM/1478.txt

You have the jumper for termination actually on "DISABLE UNIT ATTENTION".
That is the wrong place to have that jumper.

Re: [emax] Re: problem with internal HD

2011-10-07 by Ted Summers

Maybe the drive is bad, maybe bad SCSI cable.

You also haven't told us step for step what you have done.

If JP6 is on and JP1 is on, did you then:
boot from floppy
set SCSI ID in Emax2 menu for ID1
try format HD

Without exact steps and key touch, we cannot know that you have done all the
proper steps.
