Emax II Upgrade Questions: New PS, CF Drive,

Emax II Upgrade Questions: New PS, CF Drive,

2011-10-15 by ditabeardmemo

Hi everyone:

I'm in the process of undertaking some much needed maintenance on my Emax II Turbo 8MB rack. The rack is in great physical condition and I'm only the second owner, but when powering on the other day after a normal boot, I could hear the internal hard drive "wheezing", as if it was not receiving enough power. The problem eventually went away after leaving the unit on for 10 minutes or so, but I believe it is time to replace the power supply and the old internal hard drive.

Before I undertake this work, can anyone advise on the following:

1. I purchased a new Emax "Darwin" power supply from EPR Electronics. Can anyone confirm whether this power supply is a drop-in replacement for the old supply? Are any modifications necessary?

2. I purchased a PCD-50B SCSI card reader to replace the internal hard drive. Are there any installation instructions for this covering jumper settings, mods, etc? Also, do I need to make any firmware modifications (and how can I determine which firmware is installed?)

3. I would like to purchase a slim floppy to install in addition to the PCD-50B. Ted, do you still offer these? Or is there a unit I can buy "off the shelf" that will work?

Thanks in advance for your help,
DBM

1- I can't answer.

2- There aren't any installation instructions per se.
My website shows example installation:
http://djtbs1.wordpress.com/

on the PCD50b set the SCSI ID jumpers on the drive, Term power jumper, then in Emax2 boot from floppy and set the SCSI ID if necessary.
Format the media and away you go.
Use older (slower) flash media 1GB or smaller.
You must use the PC Card slot on the drive- the other slots don't work in Emax...

The firmware can only be checked in a PC and updated....it doesn't necessarily need the newest firmware as long as it can successfully format a flash.
Make sure the WRITE PROTECT jumper is not on- or the drive will be read-only.
The firmware may also be read only- the version information in the PC will show if it's read only.
A lot depends on where you got the drive- if you got it new from psism or some other vendor it should be Read / Write.
IF you got it used, it could be either way.

3- You can get slim floppy drives off ebay. I recommend TEAC FD-05 models.
I have never sold floppy drives.
I used to sell an adapter that allows connect of the TEAC.
But people weren't buying them.
I have posted the modification instructions for the adapter on the website linked above.
You can get them off ebay or from Orbit Micro. (Orbits shipping is expensive, IMO).

Internal CF card instead of HD in Emax SE HD?

2011-10-21 by el macaco

Hello everyone,

I seem to recall someone mentioning this somewhere, replacing the internal HD with a CF card. I just did this in my MPC 1000 with an IDE card reader from monoprice ($4!!), but the Emax HD is SCSI, and all the internal card readers are SCSI as well. is there a SCSI to IDE solution? I have an external card reader which is fine for now, but I would love to have a CF card inside as the base HD, then have the external CF and the floppy drive.

Also, if I did this, could I instal an internal card reader and a slim floppy and have all 3 working? has anyone done this?

Thanks,

Ed

Don't waist Your Time by finding a SCSI to IDE solution.
By a SCM PCD-50B Drive that's the easiest and cheapest way.

Thanks Ted. This is all very helpful. I picked up two of the JM215A adapters ($10 each) from eBay.

I researched the TEAC FD-05 and am not clear on which model to buy. There seem to be several different versions (including a USB model, which I know won't work.) Can you clarify at all? I'm particularly confused by the cabling and how it connects to the JM215A.

Also, I just picked up an Emax HD SE keyboard with a dead hard drive. Will a PCD-50B and a TEAC slim floppy fit in the space where the original floppy drive sits?

there is only one cable that interconnects the two for power and signal it is flat.

Anything NOT usb should work. the model numbers vary greatly due to different BEZELS. flat bezel in black has diff model # compared to grey bezel, or drive with a bezel to actually fit in a specific laptop that might be curved, etc.
Ones that came out of IBM servers that have a blue-ish colored eject and black bezel are optimal choices.

There is a picure of an adapter (though not JM215A, but it is same hookup) on my website.

Again there is a picture of that at my website I linked below #2 - it is rack- but the spacing is the same for the opening.
