Most front panel buttons don't work - Emax 1 Rack HD

Most front panel buttons don't work - Emax 1 Rack HD

2011-11-04 by mcnik_k

Hi all,

I managed to get an Emax, but unfortunately there is a fault. Most of the front panel buttons are not working, and the ones that do are not doing the correct function. From the numbers and arrows, only 7, 9, and 0 seem to work, and 7 and 9 seem to do the sideways arrows function sometimes.

Machine can load discs, and can playback sequences, but the only 'Modules' switch that is working is 'preset management', and that brings up the 'master' menu!

LCD and sliders work OK.

I have checked panel board and looks ok, also all switches work ok and have tested lead to mainboard and all connections are ok.

Have read this could be the 'scanner MPU', but cannot see a chip called "6500/11" nor "IM-386 R1125" nor "6502 Rockwell". Does anyone know where this chip is located? In any case, I have heard this can't be replaced these days, but I'm thinking maybe it is another chip that has gone such as a CD74HCT273E CMOS Logic Octal D-Type Flip-Flop (not sure what these do, but they seem to look directly at the ribbon cable coming from the display).

Any help would be much appreciated. I am ok with a soldering iron and have multimeter + oscilloscope so can run any checks anyone thinks are appropriate. Failing that, if there is anyone in the UK that fixes these old birds, please let me know!

Thanks,

Nik

the cmos logic chips deal with the leds switching and all button presses

the scanner cpu is usually for keyboards is it a rack or keyboard

now i have spare mother boards what rev is yours

Hi,

It is a rack.

Mobo EMAX CPU PCB PC333 BOARD REV A

Seems like it is possible to get the CMOS chips still http://parts.digikey.com/1/parts/515947-ic-octal-d-type-f-f-hs-20-dip-cd74hct273e.html

Will reply regarding your services off list.

Many thanks!

Hello.
When The R1125 fails, usually all the key functions (Both keyboard and buttons/Sliders) stop working. This chip scans all traffic between interface and cpu. It could be damaged but mine (and some other cases I knew) were as described before.
Best..

Re: Most front panel buttons don't work - Emax 1 Rack HD

Thanks mate.

Just did a voltage check on the switches, interesting results.

There is no voltage at either side of any of the switches that are not working.

The only switches that have voltage, and therefore are working (albeit not correctly), are:

0, 9, 7
Off / No
Enter
Play
Record
Preset Management

This leads back to no power at Diodes 5 / 6 / 7, but diode 8 has power.

The schematic (PDF service manual, page 48) shows these coming from IC12, which is a CD4028BE. This chip then goes to the Scanner CPU IC7, which is an IM368-1 BA / R1125-11.

I am not sure how to test from here on. I have the datasheet for CD4028BE, but I'm not 100% sure how to read it to confirm operation of this chip. However, I have made a guess and it seems the inputs to this chip are correct, so at a large guess I suspect this chip to have failed. I hope so anyway, because it is still available. I'm going to try to source one and swap it out.

Any further help, advice, prayers, raindances, or evocations appreciated!

Did you check continuity on the traces carrying the power to the switches etc?

Yes, continuity checked for all voltage supply lines to switches.

Fault is definitely pre-diode on the main digital board. All 4 diodes should have +5 at their chip-facing side, three of them have near zero, only one has +5, that is the one that supplies the aforementioned working switches.

Thanks!

Thanks Jack, I took out the digi board and ran an iron over the CD4028 and the Scanner chip connections, fault is still there. Also removed and reseated scanner chip, fault still there.

I reckon it is an internal fault on the scanner chip or the CD4028. I'm looking for +5 at the connections 2, 3, 14, 15 on the CD4028. The inputs from the scanner chip I think are 10 and 13, was getting the same 'low' reading on both of them when I checked.

Any more info would be great. Can get a CD4028 at Farnell, but £20 minimum spend so want to know that'll fix it.

Ok, well I have replaced both CD4028 chips (IC11, IC12), but no difference, same fault.

Looks like the scanner chip *is* partially faulty?

Also, the 'Preset Management' LED is lit during startup, apparently this means the scanner chip isn't present?

Anyone got any last ideas?

Thanks!

that chip is a programed pal chip by emu unless you can get emu to give you the bin file for it so you could burn your own you will be out of luck unless you scavange 1 from another board which will make that board useless

Wow, thanks! I didn't think those chips were still available, amazing!

One fly in the ointment is shipping to UK is $38.95 on top of $56.02 for the chip = $94.97. I have emailed them as I think posting one chip should be less money!

Also, can anyone help me confirm my chip is at fault? Any readings from a working chip would be much appreciated, just to be sure it is not an ancillary component that is pulling those 3 lines low.

Thanks!

when i did niks i changed the scanner cpu but it stilldid not work

so i put his scanner cpu in a working mother board and the scanner cpu was fine

other than that i have not diagnosed the problimatic board as it takes lots of time doing logic testing which costs lots of money

i did nik a replacement board with his scsihardware and firmware
