Just got my mac classic II

Just got my mac classic II

2011-11-29 by jdchevallier

30 dollars on craigslist...not too shabby!

I realize this has likely been covered on the forums, but I've done some searching to no avail, so...

How do get the Sound Designer files or Alchemy onto disks? I've tried formatting a floppy in the Mac Classic and then throwing it into my USB drive on my new mac...gues that would be too easy.

If anyone can give me some direction, or even point me to where this question has been answered on the forums previously I'd truly appreciate it.

Thanks guys!

dont now if the low end mac classic works

does it have scsi as some dont

all macII work up to the quadra range

i have a macIIsi and a macIIci the si is the same as the se/30 but a faster processor 20khz compared to the 16khz

the se/30 uses a dirty 32bit os and needs special software to add bigger ram than 16mb

the macIIsi does not as it was the first to have the clean 32bit os rom installed same as the ci

the se/30 and si both have a pds slot which needs a convertor board to use full lenght mubus cards
so if you want to add a audiomedia 2 or soundaccelerator2 card you need this adapter

the ci has 3 nubus slots and the sdII cards fit straight in

the quadra range have more slots

i have a quadra 840e which is a 040 processor nice machine you can add an g4 processor to it but you need os8 and higher for this and sd2 dont work properly unless you upgrade to 2.8.3 no sampler support from this version

so check the mac classic has scsi if not you wont be able to use the emax single version image

I'd actually like to know the answer to this as well. Ever since Mac OS Snow Leopard they've disabled copying to (but not from) disks formatted on older systems. I've tried SCSI as well as floppy, without luck. The only thing I could get to work was formatting the disk as an old PC format, but then the older Mac truncates the files to 8 letter names with 3 letter extensions.

It did used to be as easy as formatting the disk and putting it in the new Mac to transfer files. I haven't tried Ethernet, but there's no reason to think that would work either.

What are your other machines?

I got a Quadra 700 lately with OS 7.1. I used a Zip disk to do it. BUT, it
took 3 machines... Please don't laugh, but on the moment, it was what I
found to work. So here is the chain...

Downloaded everything on my MBP running Snow Leopard. (My original plan was
to use SheepShave, but for some reason it won't start anymore.)

Formated the zip disk on the Quadra. When I was doing it on the Powerbook
Wallstreet with OS 9, the Quadra couldn't read it. My wallstree has an
internal VST Zip drive, and I have a PCMCIA CompactFlash in it.

So I transfered the files from the MBP on a CompactFlash.
Then copied the files from the CF to the Zip disk with the PB G3.
Then I read the files on the Quadra from the Zip disk.

Complicated a bit, yes. But I'm getting an Ethernet adapter for the Quadra,
then I'll probably setup an FTP server, since we can't rely on either SMB
or Appel Share protocols.

Point is... If you have a functional Sheep Shaver, I think it should work.
I stopped f'ing around with it after 30 min, and my kitchen table looked
really cool with 3 generations of Macs running at the same time, and I had
I sort of fun after all! I had taken a day off. It was also the day of my
divorce when my wife arrived home... lol

So it's having OS 9 in your chain that's allowing you to make this file transfer work?

I'm using a Mac Pro, running Leopard, with USB Zip and a Color Classic with OS 7.5 with a SCSI Zip (which is the first Mac I ever bought - in 1993 I think, and I've kept it all these years...).

Most often, I'm running an SP12 librarian on the Color Classic, but I also have used Alchemy via Emax Sample dump. Which is sloooow. And not ideal.

I'm thinking of resurrecting an old OS 9 laptop to replace the Color Classic, and I suppose I could keep my pipeline of MIDI sample dump and SP12 librarian, but still be able to swap disks between OS 9 and OS X. Does that sound correct to you?

I'm not using Sound Designer right now, but Alchemy has been great, minus the speed. Which would improve with the addition of a more contemporary OS 9 machine. Processing only of course, not MIDI sample dump. Why are you guys using Sound Designer over Alchemy?

And also, thanks for the effort updating the group on the Mac pipeline. It's getting a bit difficult to keep up with all of the functionality I'm losing with each successive Mac OS update. The next update after Lion, I'm afraid will only allow for things people will want to do on their iPhones.

I've heard rumors that they're discontinuing the Mac Pro towers. They haven't updated the machines for well over a year...

Re: [emax] Just got my mac classic II

You are right. OS 9 enabled to bridge between the two.

Seriously, removing half a functionality which disables backward
compatibility for no apparent reason is really stupid. I haven't updated my
MBP to Lion yet because I have more and more of a back taste of the Apple
control over everything. I got an Android phone for that reason (and I'm a
Java developer). If I can't do what I want with the machines I buy, then
there is a problem.
Anyways! That's a whole other subject.

Back to the subject at hand. I had searched for ways to transfer the files
and it's just complicated (for the above reasons). The easiest, I think,
will be FTP. The other file sharing protocols are either not supported or
has changed.

As for Alchemy, I haven't tried enough of both to compare. My music
equipment is piled up in a corner of the basement because I have to fix a
few things in the house. I got the Quadra by chance on local adds. Then I
just made sure it worked and that I could use the softwares.

Why is the transfer so slow? Are you using MIDI sample dump or the RS422
connection?

Re: [emax] Just got my mac classic II

2011-11-29 by jammie

i used a pc with a parallel usb drive and used th exe image software to burn
the image to the zip disk then loaded said zip disk into the mac and
executed the program from the zip disk

worked fine

my other comps have audiomedia2 card the 840 quadra and i used the sd2
floppies to get the program working on them

and i have an accelerater 2 dsp card soundtools which was the dsp card
before protools and use the same floppy disks for for both hard ware cards
as the hardware card is the dongle

basically the same as the emulatorx is for the pc only works with emu
hardware until they did version 3

i have set up disks 1.2 2mb sd2 then i have 2.2 and 2.5

and a neat box like the old vst cubase box that houses the software and the
books

then i have the driver softwares for the dsp cards and there associate
programs that come with them

the accellerator card comes with an external adc dac convertor and is much
better than the audiomedia 2 as the audio analog path is away from the
digital of the come so no interference or crosstalk

also the old macII have 8bit soundcards so the sound output is in 8bits it
was only with the hardware would it do 16bits

but you could have a 16bit samples viewed in a macII and you could sample
dump them

it was not until the quadra range did they come with sample inputs at 16bits
with out soundcards

Re: [emax] Just got my mac classic II

2011-11-29 by Johnny Tomasello

I'm using MIDI sample dump, I haven't tried the 422 connection yet, because I don't have the cable, and haven't set aside time to build a proper one.

After replacing the backlight in the Emax, and adding a new mother board with the SCSI connection, testing that and getting it working, only to find I couldn't load the OS from any SCSI ID besides 0 (making my external Zip just a sound storage medium - not what I really wanted from the upgrade - you know how excruciating it is editing on the Emax while loading the OS from floppy) I got a bit tired of building, repairing, and testing this machine. I'll go back to it and work out the slim floppy and CF card options, as well as the 422 and transfer stuff, but, wow, I needed to get some actual music done too.

That's all in addition to new backlight for the s950, s1100, and SP12 (and all new sliders) and the the OS update and pad replacements for the Sequential 440. And an entire studio rewire.

For the last couple of months, I've had the best maintained, lowest production output studio of my entire life.

This is what I went through before Thanksgiving:

Re: [emax] Just got my mac classic II

2011-11-29 by jammie

sounddesigner2 can do all the envelopes and modulation and then dump the whole file along with the samples via rs com port much faster than the midi not as fast as smdi but 15x faster than midi dump

and you can send whole banks with all presets

you can take an EII banks file and transmit it to the emax with no changing of anything it just sends it then you can recieve the bank and save it as a emax sd2 banlk which can be read by the emax2 also you can recieve the samples from an E3 and transmit them to an EII or emax1/2 with all the filter settings and envelopes and presets as long as they fitted in the size of memory

thats why sd2 is so much better than alchemy

but if you want just dumping programs of samples then there samplitude wavelab alchemy recycle

i use sample wrench on a pc which is great and i use it with s950 old rolands and dss1 and dsm1 korg t1/2ex/3ex is sample dump engine is good

and the emax1 only has 512k so it will only 40 secs to send full samples

but if i want to be quick i use awave use waves set them up in the instrument editor doing all loops and layers and then save as sf2

then i use emxp to convert sf2 to emax image which i then write to either a floppy disk or a zip 100 image or 32mb cf card depending on what i want to use at the time

i can get the full library of transients from a roland d50 on at 16bits 22.5 khz on 1 floppy as the rom they are 1 shat samples for the whole keyboard at c4/c5 depending what the rom is

and if you use mysingle cycle sounds you can get hundreds of them on 1 disk and layering them and paning modulation and chorus you can make fat sounds

you can also do stereo samples on the emax you put the left in 1 layer and right in the other layer and hard pan them left and right but you only get 4 notes poly like this

now i think if people are having problems getting the zip disk with the image on then i will provide the service for the cost of a zip 100 disk and postage to where ever in uk and europe

and we need some todo the same in usa

Re: [emax] Just got my mac classic II

2011-11-29 by jammie

every time apple changed the os it made it harder for things to work

when they went to os8 the midi stuff got messed with so digidesign did not see it nesseray to rewright the code for sampler support as they saw back then that it was going software based or pc card based

then when they went to os9 they dropped all support for sd2

which was totally useless for sampler users any way

it would be nice if digidesign gave the program away now as an image floppy for os7 users as no one can make money from it and it would be kept for history so many programs have disapeared due to this problem they should be kept for museum recording

other companies do it sample vision you can download sample vison for windows free from there site only works on win98 pc,s tho

but i keep a win98pc and i only use winxp

vista is a bag of crap win7 is good for win98 programs but a bag of crap where winxp programs are concerned

and every one is going down the 64bit encoding route but the vsti still dont sound any better than the 32bit versions

and vsti still dont sound as good as the real modules

its the opamps and adc dac that adds to the end product that you just cant get i the softwarte versions

hence why you cant get the sound of a s950 in software

also like ensoniqs i have been making user transwaves for this synth for nealy 20 years and you can have upto 8 different transwaves playing in 1 patch with 4 note poly

now there is still no software synths that can do that thats why fizmo and asr10 samplers are still sort after getting some of the best second hand price today

2011-11-29 by jammie

you need the plus os then you can set the drive for scsi id 5 which is what the external zip termination is set to

then you will be able to load os from it just save the settings with the os to the zip drive and then it will load from that zip drive you must be using the sehd os and not the plus os

best and easiest options is emxp and a pc and the rs usb transfer unit dont need the sd2 then but you will have to do the presets in the machine

sd2 is good for creating the whole bank and presets and dumping thewhole bank file to the emax its the only way other than dumping the emax banks by the usb divice

i also use turbo synth and soft synth which does the spectral synthesis

but the best machine for spectral synthesis is the old 8bit and 16bit version of the fairlight as it showed the waveform as wavetable 3d view of each cycle and you could set a single cycle wave at the end and morph to that cycle

and its still the only machine to do it and the ppg waveterm

and the waldorf wave can do it

2 of my best kept synths along with my EII EIII

my korg dss1 with 24mb upgrade and usb drive

my korg t1and t3ex and the dsm1 sampler that i add extra pcm waveforms to

my roland samplers that are just great

and the kawai k5m and k5000r just amazing

and my sy99 and the single cycle waveforms and fm modulation by the samples nothing like it in hardware or software

i love the hardware and never sold it i use the software

but what is great is just turning on a synth and start playing straight away with out waiting for it to load up a long time os

and changing presets at a blink of an eye un like softsynths that can have massive delays

on my sy99 i can load up 64 patche press a button and im playing that patch pess another button and im playing the next patch as quick as that

2011-11-29 by Johnny Tomasello

I'm a bit confused on the first bit of advice in your email, you said to use the Plus OS first, then said not to use it, but the SEHD OS instead.

I'm using the Plus OS on my Emax SE, which I upgraded to have SCSI. The Plus OS allows me to change the SCSI ID to 5 or 6 to accommodate the external Zip, but whenever I try to use a different part of the OS, it still looks to the floppy. I've tried saving the OS to the Zip, without luck.

Is there a specific method to saving the OS to Zip that I may be doing wrong? And also, one more time, which OS should I be using, HD Plus, or SEHD?

hd plus

you need to go into special 0

then go to format scsi drive make sure you set the transpose button to scsi 5 id for the zip

then press yes it will then say os from hd use the yes no buttons to set to floppy it will use the floppy for the os

the press enter button it will say all memeory will be arrased

press yes

then it will load the os into the internal memory

then it will say all data on scsi disk will be arrased press yes it will format the disk and add the os it takes about 4 seconds to format and put os on

you need to download the addendum scsi pdf

Re: [emax] Just got my mac classic II

2011-11-29 by Johnny Tomasello

Thanks for the info. And forgive me if any of this is redundant.

I have done all of that - format, copy OS from floppy using the Plus OS, downloaded the addendum - but it still won't boot or even try to load the OS for editing from the SCSI drive.

Is there a step I'm missing? Something that tells the unit to look to the SCSI device for the OS? I can tell the Emax to look to whichever SCSI ID with the Plus transpose SCSI ID selection feature. But so far, it only seems to work for saving and loading. I know I've read somewhere that the Emax (it's the first Emax, not the 2) can only boot from SCSI ID 0. I would like for that to be untrue. Otherwise, I'll have to go ahead with the SD card upgrade. Which is fine. But is down toward the bottom of the list at this point.

Thanks again for all the info, and any further advice.

RE: [emax] Just got my mac classic II

2011-11-29 by el macaco

Yes you need to boot from scsi 0 (or internal Hard Drive) to not use the floppy for the OS. I have a scsi external card reader set to ID zero and that works really well. My HD doed a while ago and I don't miss it now that I can boot externally.

Thanks for the info. And forgive me if any of this is redundant.

But is down toward the bottom of the list at this point.

i know that in the emax sehd os that it only saw scsi id0 and would only boot and save and load from scsi id0 but i thuoght that the plus os you were able to choose any scsi and load from it do you try and load with no floppy disk in

as if you leavre floppy disk in it will always boot from that first unless it has no os and then it will boot from scsi

i have cf drives in mine so i have never used external drives

and before that i had a miniscribe 20mb drive that came with the unit

and also a ez135 drive by syquest that was a good drive and
and could be set to any scsi id

the scsi to atapi cards from ted and a ide zip 100 drive in an external case would work as they are able to set to scsi id 0

I could be wrong but I had an HD and a scsi zip (ID 5 or 6) and when my HD would stop spinning (often) it would not boot from the zip.

it could be something I did wrong, but I don't think the emax will boot since you always have to go into the scsi select to select the scsi ID of the zip. Upon boot I think it always defaults to zero, HD or no HD.

Please someone correct me if I am wrong.

Re: [emax] Just got my mac classic II

2011-11-29 by Johnny Tomasello

Yeah, I've tried to boot without the floppy in the drive, but it won't look to the external SCSI Zip. I tested my MPC 3000's CF reader (spyrus) set ti SCSI ID 0, with the Emax, but it didn't work.

I'll have to contact Ted about the cards.

Thanks, everyone, for your input.

RE: [emax] Just got my mac classic II

2011-11-29 by el macaco

With the CF reader, did you get the emax to recognize the scsi CF reader at all? Sometimes the termination needs to be on or off, it might need an active terminator, try the scsi zip after the CF reader with term on.

Also, if you have a working HD scsi ID zero is the HD, so it can't read both.

The CF card reader should work with the emax, maybe try both slots.

Re: [emax] Just got my mac classic II

2011-11-29 by jammie

i had the last of the scsi atapi cards i have 4 left

they also work with other samplers the reason i brought them was i had atapi cf card readers that worked in mpc2000xl and the roland sp808 and 909

but they would not work with the atapi cf readers but the

scsi ide with atapi they would so they worked with the acard 7720u and the scsi ide iodata scsi-e/r sothey ended up being spares but they do work with atapi zip drives

zip100 for emax1 and zip250 for the emax2 and atapi optical disks upto 560mb

Yeah, I've tried to boot without the floppy in the drive, but it won't look to the external SCSI Zip. I tested my MPC 3000's CF reader (spyrus) set ti SCSI ID 0, with the Emax, but it didn't work.

I'll have to contact Ted about the cards.

  Thanks, everyone, for your input.

Re: [emax] Just got my mac classic II

2011-11-29 by Johnny Tomasello

With the CF reader, I connected it directly to the Emax, without the Zip, set the SCSI ID to 0, and used an active terminator. I've never had an internal HD in the Emax, so there was no ID conflict.

The Emax would "see" the reader, but hang on the format option, and just never finish. I asked around and thought the drive was incompatable. I bought the Spyrus CF reader for my MPC 3000 because it was recommended specifically for it, as not all drives will work. So it seemed reasonable the same might be true for the Emax.

spryrus 2 works with the emax not version1

its the same for the pcd-50b they work with emaxes but not akai

and its also down to firmware

sprus is an mcdisk1 and the spyrus2 is a mcdisk2 made by mpl and are still manufactured by them but it costs £550 for 1 drive

I gave up trying to figure out how to get these files to disk from my mac running os 10.6 and found an amazing small mac shop in San Francisco that was able to take the files off usb and transfer them to disk for me.

Alchemy is up and running!!!

On the downside, I just realized that the os is missing patchbay and midi manager, so now I have to track those down. I've got a RS422 serial cable on the way from the lovely folks at emulator archive..this is coming along nicely! Perhaps not having an audio input won't be the end of the world.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
