Can't copy OS to emax-formated DS DD disk with EMXP and/or Omniflop

Can't copy OS to emax-formated DS DD disk with EMXP and/or Omniflop

2012-06-02 by windefalk

Hi Emax gurus!

I have read through a lot of threads regarding this topic. It feels like I'm close to a solution but... anyway. Here are my attempts;

1) Got a IBM-PC laptop with floppy disk. This floppy is "on the fly" exchangeable with i.e. a cd-rom player. Forgot what they are called...cradle? Can this be a problem hence to the problems with USB-floppys? (I'm running XP). I read that one had a similar problem with the error code 89. I think it worked for him with another floppy. I will purchase an old computer tomorrow but "everything" works except for copying the OS to disk via EMXP

2) Latest versions of EMXP 2.11.2, omniflop v3.0

3) disabled antivirus program. no removable media plugged in.

4) I can format a DS DD disk to an emax disk. But i can't copy the OS to the disk. I have tried with OS 3.2 and SE 1.1 OS

5) I can copy banks and images to an already formated emax disk (I have like 10 floppys from the seller but no emax OS disk) and they work with the emax. The OS is 3.2 according to EMXP's "Manage OS" on those floppys. I can read, write and format those floppys in EMXP but i can't transfer the OS to a newly formated disk.

4)Omniflop "test installation" gives me 281 supported formats. When I run the "Diagnostics" and "test disk" I got the message "The format is recognized. You can read, write or re-format this disk" I can format a DS DD disk with omniflop.

5) I have read both manuals for EMXP and omniflop. Am I missing something?

6) I cannot format the disk in the emax without an Emax OS disk right?

Someone got an idea?

Regards
Kalle Windefalk

Hi
You gave a lot of information about your problem but... the exact problem is still not clear to me.

- I understand you have floppy's from the seller containing the operating system 3.2 (each Emax sound disk normally also contains an OS). So you can boot the Emax, which means you can also format floppy disks in the Emax itself and copy the OS on the Emax itself.
Does that all work ?

- I understand you can format new DSDD disks for Emax on the PC with either OmniFlop itself or EMXP (using the OmniFlop driver. You can also copy sound banks to it (both in EMXP and on the Emax itself ("save bank")), correct ?

- Do I understand it correctly that you can NOT write OS (.EMX) files to these formatted floppy disks with EMXP ? If this is true, what error does EMXP give when trying to write an OS file to the floppy disk ?

Re: Can't copy OS to emax-formated DS DD disk with EMXP and/or Omniflop

2012-06-02 by windefalk

Hi!

Sorry. I wasn't clear enough!

I have bootable sound disk floppys with OS (3.2) on them, yes!
I thought you would need an emax OS-only disk to perform a disk format on the emax? Can I extract the OS from one of the sound disks to create a blank disk with OS in the emax?

Yes. I can format factory new DS HD disks (I know they won't work but I had to try) and old DS DD disks (working sound disks) on the PC. Both in Omniflop and EMXP. I haven't tried to copy sounds on the emax itself. I look into it and get back with results. Thanks =)

Yes, I can not write the OS to the formated disks with EMXP.
Windows error message is:
Exception Processing Message c0000014 Parameters 75b6bf7c 4 75b6bf7c 75b6bf7c
next EMXP error message is:
errorcode 89
The capacity of the disk in drive A is not supported by EMAX samplers.

The OS 3.2 file is an .EMX
262 kb large

I can add that I don't have a separate Emax OS-disk... if that's needed.

Re: Can't copy OS to emax-formated DS DD disk with EMXP and/or Omniflop

2012-06-02 by esynthesist

Actually there's no such thing as an Emax OS disk.
Any Emax floppy disk can contain both an OS and a soundbank.
Your floppy disks with OS 3.2 have the full OS on them, so after booting with these disks, it's perfectly possible to format another one. Just go to the Format module in the Emax, and when the module asks for the disk to be formatted, eject the OS 3.2 disk and insert an old or blank DSDD disk.
When Emax formats the disk, it will also copy the full OS to that disk, so after formatting you will have the OS-only disk.

When using EMXP, the format function will NOT copy an OS to the floppy disk, it will only format the sectors on the floppy.
So after formatting, the OS has to be copied as a seperate task.
That's what you seem to have been trying (if I understand you correctly), but you get that Windows error and the EMXP 89 error.
This EMXP error means that the floppy disk is NOT formatted in Emax format. The routine in EMXP which throws that error is also being used when EMXP wants to write a sound bank to the floppy disk.
So it seems you can not read/write anything to those formatted disks with EMXP (no OS, no sound bank).
I don't understand how you can get this 89 error if you have first successfully formatted the floppy disks for Emax. That's almost not possible.

Re: [emax] Re: Can't copy OS to emax-formated DS DD disk with EMXP and/or Omniflop

2012-06-03 by Nigel Cruickshank

Hi Kalle,

I have made OS disks on a PC with no problem. The whole process was trouble free.

Before that I tried on a Macbook Pro natively running XP and using Dosbox. The software operated but I could not burn a disk. I put this down to the USB communication to the drive (I was actually trying to format an Zip OS disk)

Next I tried and older PC with internal floppy but I think that the system was underpowered, at any rate I was unsuccessful.

Lastly I bought a mid 2000's PC for $40, installed a Dos emulator ( I cant remember which one but I can find out) EXMP and the floppy drivers etc. Worked like a charm!

Basically, if the software seems to be running fine then the problem must be with the communication with the drive or user error.

Just my 2c

Re: Can't copy OS to emax-formated DS DD disk with EMXP and/or Omniflop

2012-06-04 by windefalk

Hi E-Synthesist!

I loaded a working sound disk into the emax and went to "Format Disk".
Everything went well till I inserted the "destination" disk. The screen display "formatting.." Then I get the message "disk error". I've tried with 4 disks and now they can't load. "Bad Bank on disk".
I also tried the "copy software" function with no success.

When I loaded the disk that I had copied a sound bank to from EMXP it displayed something like "wrong os rev".

I can format a disk in EMXP but can not write OS to the formated disk.
I can write sounds (.em1) to an existing sound bank disk in EMXP.

Regards
Kalle

Thanks!

I have bought an old computer second hand a waiting for the delivery.
Bad thing is that it seems that I can't format floppys in the emax either. :/

Re: [emax] Re: Can't copy OS to emax-formated DS DD disk with EMXP and/or Omniflop

2012-06-04 by Ted Summers

You aren't using HD disks are you? If you are you have to cover the hole
(not the write protect one- the other one....)

What OS are you trying to write?
If your Emax is not SE and you attempt to load an OS with SE support it
won't load.
Also, same applies if you are trying to write an disk with HD support and
you don't have SCSI, you can get wrong OS also, I believe

Re: Can't copy OS to emax-formated DS DD disk with EMXP and/or Omniflop

Hi!

I tried HD disks and covered the left hole (front towards me)but it's the same.
I had a broken emax 1 rack and bought a emax SE keyboard with broken keys =) so I exchanged the analog board and the digital board with the boards from the SE-keyboard. The screen displays software version 3.2 or something like that (master/8/data slider in the bottom)

Re: [emax] Re: Can't copy OS to emax-formated DS DD disk with EMXP and/or Omniflop

2012-06-05 by jammie

sounds like a faulty write head on the disk drive

try replacing the drive from the keyboard to the rack

to see if you get the same errors

not uncommon fr the original disk drives to fail

ddsd disks would be better as hd disks need a stronger signal for the metal film type tape used

the dd drive uses a smaller magnetic signal and on hd disks it can get written but comes up as garbage over time

a hd drive has the same capability to write dd and hd disks thats what the second hole is for

to switch between each mode no hole it will send out the magnetic field required to write to a dd disk

if a hd disk is input then the dd field is switched off and the high mag feild is sent for writing

your problem is most likely the read and write heads are misaligned

meaning when reading a disk its fine but when writing a disk the head is off and fails to format disk

where do you live and which os do you require as i can burn you a disk and send it

Re: Can't copy OS to emax-formated DS DD disk with EMXP and/or Omniflop

2012-06-05 by windefalk

I'm impressed of your knowledge Jammie!

I think the disk drive actually is replaced by the one Route66 sell.
I'll switch the disk drive with the other one and see if that will help. I live in Sweden and I'm not sure which OS i require =)
The OS that's displayed in Master/8/.. is 3.2.
The keyboard have an SE-sticker on it and a sticker for the new digital effects... not sure if that tells you if it's SE upgraded.
Can I check it somehow? The latest SE-version is 1.1 right? So i guess I don't have the upgrade since my emax display software version 3.2?

btw, I live in Sweden.
Jammie, do you have any solutions for sale? I'm about to send you my faulty boards and if you have CF-readers, working disks or whatever works, you could add that to the price for fixing the damn things AND test them together... If you would like to do that

Re: [emax] Re: Can't copy OS to emax-formated DS DD disk with EMXP and/or Omniflop

2012-06-05 by jammie

now it means that the 3.2 os is for the pre se

you need the se os that might be why your getting the wrong os type

i put the correct os disks in the files section under my name jammie.emma

as for doing the things that you require no problem ill check the boards to see if its scsi compatible

and upgrade and fix both boards that are fualty

ill also sort out a cfdrive and slim floppy and converter and make it so you just fit it to your machine

but you need to send me the metal bracket plates either the keyboard or rack brackets

so that i can make the brackets to the drives and plate

  /Kalle

Re: Can't copy OS to emax-formated DS DD disk with EMXP and/or Omniflop

2012-06-07 by windefalk

Hi!

I replaced the drive with the one from the keyboard but then the display stopped working on the rack. No characters. Just a blue/green-ish background. The strange thing is that when I put the disk drive back in the keyboard its display stopped working...same problem as before I switch boards. The display have a little dot in the upper right corner? I´m so tired of fiddling around :(
I got the other computer yesterday so I will try write/copy/format disks with that one today... but first I need to install XP, get a keyboard and mouse and all that. :/

The disk drives are of different size as well. It looks like the keyboard have a slim floppy...but not that super slim.

/Kalle
