Emax SE Plus (non HD) Need OS 1.0 to support SCSI

Emax SE Plus (non HD) Need OS 1.0 to support SCSI

2012-09-10 by loricruzer

Hi Everyone,
I am new to the site and would like to know if anyone can help with my Emax SE Plus (non HD) keyboard ?
I purchased the unit super clean, but no OS disk. So I purchased an OS disk that was for an Emax SE rev. 1.1 and the unit worked. The next thing is that I purchased an Emax library on zip 100 disks. When I hooked up the Zip drive, it wouldn't work. I read through this forum and realized that I actually have a model 2100 Emax SE Plus with SCSI (non HD version). The 'Plus' decal is gone.

So, from what I've read here, I need the OS that supports the SCSI feature. That is the 1.0 OS for Emax SE Plus ? Is that the same one as the one in the files section marked Emax SE Plus HD ? Can anyone direct me to , or can provide the correct OS for my Emax ? I would need the simple method, download it, then burn it to floppy. I only have one pc here that has a floppy drive, it's running XP Pro. I really am not up to par with the EMXP stuff, but I do plan to get there. At this point, I just want to get the SCSI drive and the Zip drive up and running to have some sounds. I did try sampling one of my other synths into the Emax, worked great although I am a complete novice at sampling, I'll learn as I go.
Also, when I tried to access any of the files, my Trend Micro flags it all as 'Dangerous Page'. Is that normal ?
Last of all, the unit I purchased is super clean, however it is missing one of the little black slider caps for the volume. Does anyone have one for sale ?
Long post, thanks for the patience. Any advice would be appreciated.

Regards,
LC

Yes, PLUS OS 1.0 is the right OS.
I haven't had any problem with any files from files section on the group.
Sounds like TrendMicro is giving you a false positive.

1) Format a disk in Emax unit
2) Write OS image with EMXP
3) Boot Emax with the new unit.
4) Verify holding "Transpose" shows you a SCSI ID so you could select an external drive ID 1 besides 0

The black caps you can get from EPR Electronics.

Hi,
Thanks for answering my questions. I'm not quite clear on which file to choose, I only saw the 1.0 OS for Emax SE Plus HD. My Emax does not have an internal HD. Is it ok to use the 1.0 OS for the HD model, are they the same ?

Also; #2. Write OS image with EMXP .
I've been to their site and read through some things, but I am not at this point smart enough to implement EMXP. Maybe you could advise me how to 'Write OS image with EMXP' ?

Thanks for the knob info. , the machine is beautiful, but the missing knob bugs me. I'll try to order from them.

LC

Re: Emax SE Plus (non HD) Need OS 1.0 to support SCSI

2012-09-11 by loricruzer

Hi,
I went to the EMXP site and there is listed under Emax , the Emax Plus 1.0 OS (upgraded rev. 4.0) . Is that the one I should use ? In my previous post, I was referring to the User Group's Files where they have one that is 'Emax SE Plus HD' ? Which should I use, are they the same ? I read on EMXP that the OS listed there is enhanced. There is also a disclaimer for usage , which is probably just a matter of protocol.

Please advise.

Thanks again for your help,

Emax PLUS OS rev 4.0 is for use with the EmuSer Serial interface box.
It SHOULD work, but as I don't have the EmuSer box, I use the PLUS OS 1.0.

PLUS OS 1.0 will work even if you don't have an internal HD.

Read the EMXP for instructions how to use the program.
It is a menu option in the program to write an OS to a disk.

Re: Emax SE Plus (non HD) Need OS 1.0 to support SCSI

2012-09-11 by loricruzer

Hi,

I downloaded the EMXP on my pc and read through it, at least as far as I could get before meltdown. If I understand correctly, I have to download the Omniflop then the EMXP then go from there.
The problem is that we have two pc's and two laptops here but the only one with a floppy drive is not my personal computer.

I can see that if I want to really use the features of EMXP, then I'll have to buy an extra pc with XP and an internal floppy drive.

At this point , I just need the 1.0 OS for Emax SE Plus on floppy so that I can at least access the sound library that I purchased on Zip 100 disks.

Maybe someone in the user group has one or may be willing to make one for me and send it. I would be more than happy to pay for the material, time, energy, and postage for it.

Again, I'm new here, and I'm not sure how this works or if it's even ok to ask if anyone can just sell me the correct OS disk ?

I plan to keep this unit, so I'll be looking to eventually buy another PC with the correct system just for the Emax. Too bad I can't use my laptop, but according to EMXP, the pc has to have an 'internal' floppy drive.

Anyway, I'm thinking that a lot of group members will see this, maybe someone can supply the disk ? The only thing is that I can't post my personal info. here so they will have to email me direct.

loricruzer@gmail.com

I would really appreciate the help.

Regards,
Lori

Hi, I don't know if you've received further assistance from our esteemed group. You will find that this group includes several of the de facto authorities on keeping these musical instruments preserved (not me!).

If you don't want to spend time trying to get the EMXP programme to work, you may want to just consider buying new floppy disk samples from one of the long-established sample vendors, such as kidnepro.com or northstarsamples.com (both of whom I have purchased samples from since the 80s). I expect that they can ship their samples loaded with the Emax Plus 1.0 software (I would confirm that with each of them first). Remember that the floppy disks that the Emax requires are the harder-to-find double-sided, double-density disks (DS/DD), which both of those vendors have. No, I have nothing to do with either vendor, just a past customer.

Others here may be able to speak more fully to storage on a ZIP drive via SCSI, but since your Emax PLUS has the SCSI port built in, you may wish to consider getting a SCSI CF card reader, which is quicker and more reliable. Much has been written on that subject in the archives for this group.

Speaking of the Emax Plus, that is a quite rare machine, and I've only happened across a handful of them since purchasing my Emax SE (rev 2) new in '87. It would be great (to further document this variation of Emax) if you could upload a picture(s) of the front panel (or email me a picture). The keyboard version in particular had at least two different known variations in the panel graphics.

Congratulations on getting what I consider a still unique and rewarding musical instrument. Best wishes.

Re: Emax SE Plus (non HD) Need OS 1.0 to support SCSI

2012-09-15 by loricruzer

Hi MAP,

Thanks so much for taking time to address my situation.

No, I have not recieved any further assistance.

I called a computer tech friend, we set up 'Team Viewer' to network the pc's and walked through it. Loaded Omniflop, then were in the process of loading EMXP. We left off with having to format some sub files, then ran out of time. Now that he knows what I need, he will go through the process and then hook up and walk me through it.

To be honest with you, I really am not interested in EMXP at all at this point. Perhaps later, but for now I just need a floppy with the Emax SE Plus 1.0 OS to support the SCSI interface. That will enable me to use the Zip drive for the Emax 1 library that I purchased on zip disks. That is my dilemna.

I can make a copy of my current OS 1.1 in a few seconds and drop in the mail tomorrow at a nominal cost. I was hoping that one of the group members might do that for me.

So, thanks for the links for the floppy samples. I'll check it out, if I can buy one of their floppys with OS 1.0 , I'm good.

I do have the correct high quality DS/DD disks, nos sealed.

Again, I only need to use the Zip drive because I have the Emax 1 original sound library on zip disks. I don't know how a CF card reader works, wouldn't I still need the SCSI interface, and therefore would also need the 1.0 OS floppy to recognize it ?

I'll work on the pix of the Emax SE Plus.

Regards,
Lori

I expect that they can ship their samples loaded with the Emax Plus 1.0 software (I would confirm that with each of them first). Remember that the floppy disks that the Emax requires are the harder-to-find double-sided, double-density disks (DS/DD), which both of those vendors have. No, I have nothing to do with either vendor, just a past customer.

It would be great (to further document this variation of Emax) if you could upload a picture(s) of the front panel (or email me a picture). The keyboard version in particular had at least two different known variations in the panel graphics.

Re: [emax] Re: Emax SE Plus (non HD) Need OS 1.0 to support SCSI

2012-09-15 by Ted Summers

Lori-

No, you can use the HD OS for use with SCSI interface on an internal CF
reader.

If you have one of the blue Zip drives, you cannot boot from it- it is not
SCSI ID 0, it is probably ID 5 or ID 6.

A CF reader allows you to boot the Emax from it like a HD without using the
floppy anymore as it can be set to ID0, basically truly replacing a HD.
The whole feature of PLUS 1.0 OS is to allow access of SCSI ID other than 0.

Please see my website for further detail about CF readers
http://djtbs1.wordpress.com/2010/10/04/some-install-related-pics/#

Also- with EMXP you can make a PLUS 1.0 disk pretty easy.

Format a disk in Emax with current OS.
Go to PC, and using EMXP write the OS.

-or-

If you have DOS (files available on the group I do believe), you can do it
this way without all the OmniFlop stuff...
1) Format a floppy in Emax
2) Boot PC from DOS floppy (or DOS partition, which is what I have on my PC)
3) Using EMXUTIL (also available on the group- put it on a floppy)
Start EMXUTIL and create the OS disk from the PLUS 1.0 OS on the group.

This is how I create my SE Update disks when people send me their logic
boards to get SCSI installed and don't have SE....

Ted
