hi.
first sampling on my 'new' emax1. And it sounds like there is something wrong with it.
Would you be able to direct me towards the problem by hearing those samples i made?
https://soundcloud.com/paplusse/sets/emax-sampling-noise-problem

thanks guys!

Dear All
I'm in possession of an old emax. And I can sell it to any one who is keen
on that item. It is in working condition and no start up disket with me.
thanks

Honestly, it sounds like you were sampling something off of your computer and didn't utilize proper gain staging.

Re: [emax] bad sound

2013-01-15 by monsieur escargot

I've uploaded the original file now. yes it is off the computer, unmastered
drum session bit.
the gain was set to 0dB on the emax and its Vumeter was going over half
way. I had tried it hotter, but worse results, and i made sure i was
sending mono signal and i checked the audio cable.
It doesnt do it with the few samples on disk supplied with the rack.

for the gain stagging, is it correct that you can't audition what you are
sampling through the emax? only the result once you trigger it? I send
signal to emax though an headphone amp which can mono and monitor thru the
other channels either on headphones or mixer. Can't see what im doing wrong
with gain staging, but in a way i hope it is me and not the machine!

thanks
dave

Re: [emax] bad sound

the noise you are recording is definitely from your soundcard.
if the ratio "soundcard hardware output volume"/ "Sample volume inside the
computer" is not right (sample too low/soundcard volume high) you will
record a lot of noise. It will be even worse if the emax input is high.
try to normalise you sample in the computer then lower the hardware output
of your soundcard if needed, and hit the emax as hard as you can.

Take the headphone amp out of the equation and post the results. I would guess that is what's raising your noise floor.

yes i didn't see that
sure don't use the headphone amp to sample in the emax!

Re: bad sound

2013-01-15 by papluss

Ok
I have bypassed the headphone amp, made the signal hotter into emax.
Sounds perhaps a bit better. (uploaded try2: https://soundcloud.com/paplusse/sets/emax-sampling-noise-problem)
I know it sounds like a digital noise, but I can't hear it from the RME UFX soundcard. It is very clear when i stop the playback early and keep emax sampling, then when emax stops sampling the noise stops (the recording carries on a little)
Also at the begining i retriggered the sample to make you hear the nearly flanged type sound i get, with slightly different sound on every trigger.
At first i though the chorus was on or that the sample was on 2 voices playing together, but chorus is off, and i don't master yet the emax 2 voice architecture, but on a menu quick tour, i couldn't see anything abnormal.
Could the emax generate that digital noise? Would that be AD/DA conversion problem?
How do you guys monitor your emax input?
Thanks for your time guys.

dave

Are you monitoring back through the soundcard? Sounds like the output is
getting fed back into the input.

Re: [emax] bad sound

2013-01-15 by jammie

its the headphone amp thats the problem

made for small signal amplification

thatwhysamplingfrom a headphoneoutput is a no no

also the out put from the soundcard will be line level

most proberly -10bdu

thats why you need a mixer asittakes the line level

and can drivethe signal louder

if your going to record from a soundcard

i would surgest doing it internally as that will be digital

and not the rubbish dacs and opmaps used in soundcards save as wave files
and use emxp to convert to the emax format

you will get a much better recording

Re: [emax] Re: bad sound

yes that would cause the chorus fx as its a delayed version

and will be out of phase this will also cause frequencies to be removed and will give you a dirty muffled noisy sound

Re: bad sound

2013-01-15 by papluss

I've tried sampling thru mixer instead, with emax output muted so no feedback possible (but emax doesnt seem to output when in Vu mode or while sampling)
soundcard outputs are -10dB into mixer into emax.

the crap is still there.
can someone tell me if emax could generate this kinda digital sound if some kind of converter problem.
and can you confirm that there is no possible way of monitoring the emax input?

I found a solution to the flanged sound tho, setting up the midi to poly instead of omni and changing the midi basic channel to something else.
That is quite obscure and involve a weird behavior of my nord stage as master keyboard, i wont go to long on that, i can explain what i found if someone runs into the same problem, but now my problem is 'just' about that digital noise.

thanks

Re: [emax] Re: bad sound

The flanging effect on the "2nd try" sounds like you're triggering the sample more than once, so you might be onto something with the omni/poly mode. Are you triggering it from the Emax keyboard *and* via MIDI?

Fixing up my Emax rack

2013-01-16 by Carl Lofgren

Hey Jammie,

The Emax rack is on the way to you now. I guess it will arrive early next week. Apart from the Emax itself I've included the slim floppy, slim floppy adapter and the Microtech CF-SCSI you were interested in buying from me. I also removed the fader knobs before I sent the unit - since they easily fall off and can get lost.I didn't send any floppies since I expect you to have floppies already.

I would like you to install the new OLED display you got from Ted, as well as install the SCSI. Install the slim floppy and experiment to see which SCSI CF-readers you have is compatible with the Emax. As I said in my previous mails - I'd rather not go for the traditional PBC-50 version since the PC Card adapter sticks out way too long.

Let me know how things go and when you get the unit!

Thanks!

/C

How exceptionally embarrassing. This should have been sent as a private mail to Jammie. Sorry about telling you all about my plans for fixing up my Emax rack.
