Replacing EMAX HD SE hard drive with external zip drive

Replacing EMAX HD SE hard drive with external zip drive

2013-06-10 by Rob Armstrong

Hello. I am the proud owner of an EMAX HD SE model # 2010 keyboard, but the
original hard drive is now dead (R.I.P.). I have run into a few problems
trying to replace the dead miniscribe hard drive with an external zip
drive. Basically, there is no external db25 on the rear panel of the
keyboard. Inside, I see an IDC 26 pin on the corner of the circuit board
closest to the hard drive. I have seen pics where other people have an
external db25 close to where this 26 pin is but a little lower. Please see
attached pic. I am confused on how to proceed because there is not much
info out there on this specific situation. Is the 26 pin IDC a scsi port
for an external drive? or should I daisy chain off the dead hard drive or
the floppy disc? Thank you. PS, any hints on which connectors/ adapters to
buy would be helpful. The zip drive has a db25.

Is the 26 pin IDC a scsi port
for an external drive?

Yes

or should I daisy chain off the dead hard drive or
the floppy disc?

This is better as it would properly terminate the SCSI chain to do it this way (I don't know what EMU was thinking when they added the port this way- it's not SCSI best practice).

You can get a 50pin to DB 25 SCSI converter on ebay.

Or install a PCD-50b / 60b in the floppy slot with a slim floppy.

Awesome! Thank you very much. I didn't have any luck finding an IDC 50 to DB25 but I found an IDC 26 pin to DB25. I figure I can leave the dead hard drive in there and it will properly terminate the scsi line. So do I just plug it in, format a zip disk and it will work? Or do I have to do anything else to the board or the zip drive. Thanks.

I wouldn't leave the old HD in there. I would use the termination on the
new device to terminate the bus. Zip's will auto terminate.

Please note that most external Zip drives cannot be set to ID0, therefore the Emax won't boot from it.

Thats kind of a bummer. So it wont boot from the zip even if I take out the HD and put the zip in its place? Do I boot from the floppy?

Re: [emax] Re: Replacing EMAX HD SE hard drive with external zip drive

Internal SCSI Zips which can be set to ID 0 are somewhat hard to come by.
A Zip drive isn't something I would recommend buying used.... there is the
infamous click of death....

If you get one of the blue external zips, no it won't boot from it. Those
only have ID 5 and 6 as options (with a switch on the back)
Then you have to boot from floppy every time.
Which is exactly why people are buying flash media drives and putting it in
with a slim floppy.
Floppy is there if you need it, but media drive has no moving parts to go
bad...and can be set to ID 0.
And slim floppy are readily available and cheap.

Re: Replacing EMAX HD SE hard drive with external zip drive

I have some unexpected but good news. I was inside the EMAX looking at the hard drive and going over what I needed to do when I noticed that the hard drive still had power. I followed the 3-wire power connector back to a connector on the power board. I believe that this connector was loose or had some gunk in there because when I disconnected it and cleaned it out, the hard drive started working again. What a great sound, (like a mini garbage truck.) Thanks for all of the pointers. I believe I will look into that PCD 50b / slim floppy and use that as a replacement when the hard drive goes.
