Thanks for the additional information. > ------ > anyway, on a more positive note....you've checked out the motu > 828 and are impressed? when you say its around 20% better > than the vx pocket, what do you mean by that? It pushes about 20% more ASIO DSP. I took a song that maxed out my VXPocket ASIO (the song quits half way through) which uses several EXS24s, an ES1, a VST synth, and probably 12-15 various insert and bus FX. Not only did the 828 get through the song, but I was able to add one additional PlatinumVerb and still play the entire piece. I estimate this (to be more accurate) at about a 15% increase in stability and ASIO bandwidth, enough to address any song I have conceived up to date. My VXPocket falls slightly short on a couple tracks and I have to start bouncing. I would recommend the 828 to anyone depending on FireWire for I/O, such as with the Cube. A word of caution: I did this test at the store, and installation was irritating. Installing the drivers on the Mac requires the "easy installation" of the MOTU Audio Desk, a requirement I found annoying although you can delete the application after the fact. Additionally, the control panel and rivers required FireWire 2.4 or above, a version that doesn't even ship with many MacOS9.1 disks. This really pissed me off. Someone at the store had to go upstairs once I obtained the URL path to the drivers on the Apple site. Thanks to a friend that works at the store, I had a SCSI zip drive on hand to bring it into my computer (he also had the SCSI adapter for my G3 SCSI powerbook). It took 4 frickin' hours to get it installed because of all these surprises, but provided you have the drivers ahead of time and install the "easy" (not "custom") installation of the ASIO/AudioDesk, you'll be up in a few minutes. Once FireWire was in place and I performed the default install, Logic recognized it right of the bat and I was off and running. Hope this helps...
