Asked this last week and nobody responded so I'll try again...
How have people been dealing with the latency in EXS midi
response. Has this been an issue for users?
Thanks,

I've got a very low latency ( 5 ms), i can play without any prob, the
Latency is not in the EXS, it's in the SoundCard....

Latency depends on your audiocard, not on the EXS. The EXS is sample accurate
during playback. If your audiocard allows very low settings (the Hammerfall
e.g. allows buffers down to 1.5ms), then you have instant reaction.

Hi,
yes a bunch of us have or have had problems with latency. It has to do with
your audio card and drivers. Certain cards perform very well and others not
so well. I'm using a VX pocket and was having a terrible problem until I
updated the driver for it allowing me to control latency. Not experiencing
problems now. So look at your card and drivers for the answer to your
problem.

hope this helps

Can someone please state the best ASIO2 card for Windows for close to real-time response while playing the EXS24 from my control synth? I prefer 8 analog I/O, so I was looking at Delta 1010, Digi001, Layla, or Motu 2408... I have a PIII/650, Intel BX Chipset, 512MB of ram.. Any advice? I was looking for something other than the hammerfall (need analog more than adat, but both would be nice I..I've heard the Motu is bad under Windows).

Regards,
Mark

I would go for the Hammerfall with the Alesis A/D converter. My equipment
rep told me that Hammerfall will eventually ship other breakout boxes for
their PCI/PCMCIA cards, but that's a few months away at least. The Alesis
converter is a good choice in the meantime, the AI3 or something like that.
I've heard good things about the Delta as well.

ive never used that particular alesis product but i have used
many others...my considered opinion? the most unreliable gear
ive ever used.

I used an ADAT for years with no problem. You should state the product you
are complaining about. I've not heard anything bad about the AI3. Sometimes
tape heads get worn out and ADATs are no exception, but those were quite an
attractive option and are still in use today all over the place.
Generalizing all of Alesis' products seem unfair. I don't like all MOTU
products, but some are excellent. I just tried out the MOTU 828 which
performs about 20% better than the VXPocket and works more reliably than the
pocket. I'm tempted to go for it but want to put it against the Hammerfall
PCMCIA... Jer

its not a generalization at all. im simply stating my experience of
alesis gear. ive never used an adat.

Yeah, but the question remains, what equipment did you not like? It is a
generalization if you choose not to be specific about what products you had
a problem with. This isn't useless chatter; if you have a valid complaint
about Alesis, you should tell us what it is so we can make better
judgements.

I use the Motu 2408 with windows. It works flawlessly. The latency was high
at first
because i was trying to use the EASI and PC Drivers. With The ASIO drivers It
screams. My Setup: PIII 800 , 512Mb RAM, BX Chipset ASUS P3BF.. Also Use
Motu Midi Express XT and The timing is great.

Re: Alesis - was EXS and latency...

-------
compressors, reverbs, 2 drum modules (and some ive forgotten
about, im an old guy!). all of em simply stopped working sooner
or later. i maintain my gear well, and i do expect a degree of
malfunction. the thing which tipped the balance for me was
spending a small fortune on the DM Pro drum module and then
having it pop twice on paying sessions. ive since sampled all the
sounds i want from it, and unsuccessfully tried to sell it.
id like to be more supportive of alesis, i do appreciate the design
and intention, but given my track record with them i cant.
in contrast, i owned an akai s1000 for over ten years, hammered
it almost every day, and not once did it fall over.

sigh.... i dont like to berate equipment manufacturers but this is
my experience.

anyway, on a more positive note....you've checked out the motu
828 and are impressed? when you say its around 20% better
than the vx pocket, what do you mean by that?

Thanks for the additional information.

It pushes about 20% more ASIO DSP. I took a song that maxed out my VXPocket
ASIO (the song quits half way through) which uses several EXS24s, an ES1, a
VST synth, and probably 12-15 various insert and bus FX. Not only did the
828 get through the song, but I was able to add one additional PlatinumVerb
and still play the entire piece. I estimate this (to be more accurate) at
about a 15% increase in stability and ASIO bandwidth, enough to address any
song I have conceived up to date. My VXPocket falls slightly short on a
couple tracks and I have to start bouncing. I would recommend the 828 to
anyone depending on FireWire for I/O, such as with the Cube. A word of
caution: I did this test at the store, and installation was irritating.
Installing the drivers on the Mac requires the "easy installation" of the
MOTU Audio Desk, a requirement I found annoying although you can delete the
application after the fact. Additionally, the control panel and rivers
required FireWire 2.4 or above, a version that doesn't even ship with many
MacOS9.1 disks. This really pissed me off. Someone at the store had to go
upstairs once I obtained the URL path to the drivers on the Apple site.
Thanks to a friend that works at the store, I had a SCSI zip drive on hand
to bring it into my computer (he also had the SCSI adapter for my G3 SCSI
powerbook). It took 4 frickin' hours to get it installed because of all
these surprises, but provided you have the drivers ahead of time and install
the "easy" (not "custom") installation of the ASIO/AudioDesk, you'll be up
in a few minutes. Once FireWire was in place and I performed the default
install, Logic recognized it right of the bat and I was off and running.
Hope this helps... Jer
