Yes.

Well, "whatever works" is the best answer I guess :).  How about some 
200-300 MB for starters?  I use 130 MB for Logic on a 500 MB system, 
and that works like a charm.  Just beware of the occasional plug-in 
that _does_ use Logic memory instead of system mem.  The LM4 is the 
only one I can think of right now (won't load all drum-samples if 
Logic has too little memory) but there are probably others.  But 
that's simply a matter of increasing mem-allocation if you suspect a 
lack of ram to be the problem.

Yes, I recall the same, so I guess you're right.  Easy to check: in 
the Finder open the "About this computer" dialog from the Apple menu. 
If the system is reported to consume some 600 MB instead of the usual 
100 MB, then you'll know where the extra 500 MB comes from :).
