This is definitely not normal behaviour.  I've been using the EXS for 
quite some time now, and never encountered anything remotely similar 
to the problems you describe.  Does it only happen with Emagic 
softsynths, or do other softsynths suffer from the same behaviour as 
well?

Does sound like a system/setup problem, yes.  I wouldn't know what 
can cause it though, sorry...  The most likely cause seems to be the 
serial port/midi-interface combo.  Maybe try to boorow a 
USB-interface from someone and try to see if the problem goes away?
