This preference setting has got nothing to do with converting. The EXS's internal processing is allways going on in 32bit float, so every loaded sample has to be converted. If you're using "source" quality this has to happen on the fly => using up more CPU power. If you are however using "32bit float" samples will be converted when the EXS loads them into your RAM. This of course means a bit more RAM will be used (double amount if the source is 16bit, 1/3 more if it's 24bit), but you'll get quite some better performance with it (I'd even buy some more RAM to get the benefits of saving up CPU power).
