Update on the suggestions below: This technique works great. I've created some "master" instruments, combining up to 6 different patches across the keyboard (some filling 10 octaves!- ie. solo trumpet, trumpet section, harmon mute, cup mute), to give me multiple variations of an instrument in one patch.
