Headroom can be incredibly important to get the best sound. It's a device to device thing though. For instance, the Kurzweil K-2000/2500 series really have a dramatic improvement in sound when you crank up the headroom. Same with the Roland JV/XV series. But the Roland S-760/770 samplers and some other devices sound really good no matter what the headroom is. As a general digital rule though, almost everything sounds fuller when your levels are set to "audible distortion minus one". Of course, there are exceptions and you should always leave the final decision up to your ears and your own taste. Best, EP
