First of all: everyone who replied: thanks a lot for your input & ideas.

Even simpler: type/creator are not relevant at all. Downloaded sf2
files appear as plain text files, and are converted fine. This one
.sf file is plain text as well, and isn't seen by the EXS. Changing
the extension to sf2 doesn't help (hey, I'm not _that_ dumb -- I
_had_ tried the most obvious approaches first :).

So I downloaded Awave. Next Virtual PC (or Windows) complains that
there are too many open 16-bit files -- "please quite some 16 bit
programs or increase the FILES line in config.sys". Since there's
nothing to quit, I add a line "FILES = 32" to config.sys. Still the
same complaint. Then changed this line into "FILES = 256". Now the
installer seems to launch, resulting in a hard crash, which is
reported to be caused by Explorer (which isn't running at all)???
Ctrl-alt-del to reset the PC... And out of ideas...

Gosh, how I hate PCs, really... It's probably just me, but all too
often I seem to run into stuff like this when using the PC...

Well... I don't exactly agree... Haven't used many soundfonts yet --
actually just downloaded the 1st five last week -- but there are some
nice ones imo (and some mediocre as well, agreed). The one I'm trying
to convert is a very complete pipe organ, which I'd *LOVE* to give a
try -- got rather high ratings at the download site.

If anyone has any ideas left...
