Hm, must be Virtual PC as I never had any such messages (but no, that
doesn't make me love PCs...). Awave is rather stable too.

I wasn't exactly talking about soundfonts in general but about the .sf
variety.
While I have converted quite a lot of SF2, and while there are quite a lot
of them doing a really nice job, the same doesn't hold for SF... I found
almost all of them to be rather crappy.
