I just downloaded the splendid grand piano from the akai site
but don't have any utility to convert the sampler files to .exs.
Would someone mind emailing me the .exs files , or a link to
them, it would be very much appreciated.
 Thanks

Hey...

I have found the ones on this site to work great, not sure about the
"splendid" one though...

[exs] Converting *.sf files?

2002-12-26 by Hendrik Jan Veenstra

Hi all,

I have a soundfont which the EXS doesn't see -- it's a .sf instead of
a .sf2. The .sf2's I had convert flawlessly, so don't tell me where
to put what -- I already know that :-). Any ideas? And: this is on
a Mac, if it matters (which it probably does). Although I do have
Virtual PC so if there's some freebie PC conversion tool that changes
sf into sf2, I would be happy as well...

try AwaveStudio from http://www.fmjsoft.com, it is a kind of swiss-knife for many kinds of soundfiles. And they have a shareware-version, wich does everything(only one file and than start it new for the next).

Hendrik,

Why don't you try using ResEdit? Open up a .sf2 file with it, and look at
the the Type and Creator info. Open the .sf file as well, and match its
info to that of the .sf2 file. You might want to change the suffix as well
so that it's the same, just to be sure...

I have two creator codes utilities for Mac. One is a drag & drop utility.
Check them out at http://musicbootcamp.com/exs24.shtml

For the record, these are freeware but I was not the author. Never the less,
they rock!

I would have suggested exactly the same.
Just res-hacking or renaming some .sf to .sf2 usually won't result in big
pleasure...

Anyways, SF (now, just look how they ripped of my initials... I should sue
them, Sonic Foundry and some town in california) was the pre-SF2 format,
often making use of some RAM samples which you could find on oldskool
SBlaster cards. As these samples can't be included the file transistions
sometimes won't work at all.

Also, most likely I wouldn't even bother with .sf at all. Over the past I
have been downloading tons of them, just to find out that I never even used
a single one. And no, I ain't Mr. Golden Ears - those sounds were just too
lousy though.

Even simpler: type/creator are not relevant at all. Downloaded sf2
files appear as plain text files, and are converted fine. This one
.sf file is plain text as well, and isn't seen by the EXS. Changing
the extension to sf2 doesn't help (hey, I'm not _that_ dumb -- I
_had_ tried the most obvious approaches first :).

So I downloaded Awave. Next Virtual PC (or Windows) complains that
there are too many open 16-bit files -- "please quite some 16 bit
programs or increase the FILES line in config.sys". Since there's
nothing to quit, I add a line "FILES = 32" to config.sys. Still the
same complaint. Then changed this line into "FILES = 256". Now the
installer seems to launch, resulting in a hard crash, which is
reported to be caused by Explorer (which isn't running at all)???
Ctrl-alt-del to reset the PC... And out of ideas...

Gosh, how I hate PCs, really... It's probably just me, but all too
often I seem to run into stuff like this when using the PC...

Well... I don't exactly agree... Haven't used many soundfonts yet --
actually just downloaded the 1st five last week -- but there are some
nice ones imo (and some mediocre as well, agreed). The one I'm trying
to convert is a very complete pipe organ, which I'd *LOVE* to give a
try -- got rather high ratings at the download site.

If anyone has any ideas left...

Hm, must be Virtual PC as I never had any such messages (but no, that
doesn't make me love PCs...). Awave is rather stable too.

I wasn't exactly talking about soundfonts in general but about the .sf
variety.
While I have converted quite a lot of SF2, and while there are quite a lot
of them doing a really nice job, the same doesn't hold for SF... I found
almost all of them to be rather crappy.

For the record, this is no SF but a plain SF2 file. It's just that it's
somewhat hidden in the zip, along with some .ea2 files (setup files for the
SBLive, adjusting reverb and the likes). Plus, it's packed in some .sfpack
archive as well (sfpack is a free packer/unpacker for SF2, don't know if it
will run on VirtualPC).
However, I converted the file:
http://www.geocities.com/saschafranck/Cathedral.zip
(you need to do the "save target as" thing, sorry for the temporary server
hassle, was the best free one I found).
Lots of EXS patches inside the file, pretty much questionable ones too...

Sascha

What the *&^..??? Yes, the zip unpacked fine -- got the docs, and
.ea2 files and all. But the EXS didn't see the .sf and ignored it...

Ah, that's probably been the problem then.

Great -- thanks! Downloading right now...

>Lots of EXS patches inside the file, pretty much questionable ones too...

:-) I'll have a look. I also downloaded the Jeux1.4 organ from the
same location. Lots of patches as well, and in principle good organ
sounds, but somehow half (or more) of the looppoints are screwed up.
Quite a horrid job to fix. I'm slowly making progress, but this is
gonna take a while. When I'm done, I'll make the entire organ
available (204 .exs instruments).

I realize after reading several posts that this information wasn't entirely
relevant, but I have occasionally had problems using EXS24 instruments from
PC users that these utilities fixed. Good to keep in mind if creator/type
codes are relevant to another kind of problem. -Jer

I sometimes get a similar response (without the FILES part) in VPC too.
This happens when I try opening files from a Shared Mac/PC Virtual
Drive/Folder. If I copy the file to a VPC virtual drive, it usually
works fine. What windows are you running in VPC?

Same here, but I really think it is more VPC's blame.

I had the installer in a shared folder indeed. However, when trying

Although I am not fond of PCs, it's not a good idea to characterize PCs by
the behavior of VPC (any version). There are many issues that arise due the
the limitations of the emulator that are not indicative of a full-size PC
running Windows. Again, I'm not defending PCs, but I personally am not
impressed by VPC. It's slow and torturous to use. It's nice to have when you
don't have a PC and HAVE to pull up a simple application, but any prolonged
use and dependence is not my idea of a good time. I've had similar problems
to the one you are describing and had to mess extensively with the VPC prefs
to get better behavior. Updating to the latest version was also helpful.
Best of luck to you. I know this kind of thing is a headache. -Jer

Agreed. I only use it when I have to, for short periods of time and
simple apps, if possible.

Well, Sascha was kind enough to do the conversion for me, so I don't
have to bother anymore.

BTW, Sascha, if you're reading this: did you try any of the converted
organs yourself? Did you notice how many of the looppoints seem to
be screwed up? I wonder what causes that -- a bug in the EXS
routines?
I'm currently working on a quite nice set of 200+ pipe organs (Jeux
1.4 soundfont) that suffers from this same problem. It's a royal
pain having to adjust half of the loops in 200+ instruments that can
use up to 20 zones per instrument...

Briefly, yes.

I noticed that on quite some converted SF2, but as it doesn't happen on all
conversions I'm not sure about whom to blame.
Maybe I should reinstall that BS-1 soundfont player (VSTi) demo to have a
better chance of comparing. Btw, I can highly recommend getting that one to
save you from unnecessary conversions. Even if the demo is polyphony/beep
limitated it will usually give you an impression whether a soundfont is
worth it at all, without going through the tedious process of cleaning up
all the sample mess the EXS puts out on any sort of conversions...
Here's the URL:
http://homepage.mac.com/bismark/bs-1/readme_english.html
(make sure to switch of its filter when testing, filter settings won't be
transferred to the EXS anyways)

Hosting archives for EXS24?

2003-01-02 by Murray McDowall

Hi Jer,

I have built some big electric bass instruments -- each has about 15
unlooped samples at 24 bits. Even after multimedia compression in WinRAR
they are 16 Mb. I don't have access to a large enough space to host them
through my ISP.

Just wondered if you would be prepared to host this for me -- either on
your own site or on some other place you have access/knowledge of.

Regards,
Murray

Yes, I'll host it as long as my ISP doesn't complain. I doubt they will.
It's a company run by some friends of mine, so let's give this a go. Contact
me directly (not on the list) to work out the details. -Jer

Thanks Jer,

I am on a 56 modem so it would take a while -- I could send one of them later
tonight local time (say in 6 hours or so). If you have an FTP account or
something that would probably work pretty well.

In case it doesn't work out with Jer, for whatever reason; you could try Garth from Chicken Systems. He set up a page a while ago on his site for user EXS samples/patches. So far only my vibes and Michael Karlsson's strings are up there.

If you want to have a look; the page is at:

Hey all...

Not to *dis* anyone else's offer, but I would go with the
http://www.chickensys.com/exs/ offer...

I just downloaded from that site at 180 kb/s on a cable modem!!! Not
bad...

take care,

Just FTP to www.soundcentral.com/incoming (no spaces in the file name),
with a text file with a short description, and I'll test it out on PC and
Mac and put it up.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
