Some advice on horns samples please

Some advice on horns samples please

2003-09-29 by robcatlender

Hi all,

I have trouble with finding some sample-sounds of (non classic)
trumpet, trombones and saxes.
Most of the cd's I see, seem to be full of (user ready..my God..)
riffs, which I don't want. I want the tones themselves. With and
without scoops, fall offs, different dynamics, sforzati and so on.
I also want seperated sounds of these instruments, not mixed. I can
do that myself. So no trumpet and tenor sax together.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Or better, does anyone
know a place to download.

I bought brass supersection and was very disappointed - stereo
samples that were out of tune L to R; samples that had "latency" as
they had a gap at the front of the sample and most samples did not
cover the full range of the instruments....

Not sure if this helps...

If you can get your hands on Computer Music Mag Issue 60, it has some brass
samples, Bb Trumpet, Trombone, Sax and a few sections playing chords, 7ths,
Dim, Major/minor, (by Cyclick) 16bit of course.. For the cost of a mag...

I found this and it sounds pretty good if you want a more jazz and
funk like thing

I called the gang at Ilio (very helpful, as always) about Memphis horns.
There are no single note samples designed for creating your own lines, but
it is a phrase/lick oriented collection. I love the other Ilio/Spectrasonic
stuff I have, but that wasn¹t what I needed. I ended up with the Phantom
Horns from Zero G. It has some phrases but also has individual notes & some
effects (fall offs, trills, cresc. Etc) For my needs it was a good trade off
and not very expensive if I recall (Got mine via EAST WEST at around $100,
if I recall correctly).

Yes they are, but he's looking for pop/big-band type section horns and
their assorted effects. Orchestral French horns just won't cut it for those
Earth, Wind & Fire riffs.

First of all, sorry for not answering earlier. Had a few busy days.
Then, thanks to all of you who advised me on the horns sample cd.
I must say, I'm still in doubt.

I think the Quantum Leap Brass, the 6-CD collection that Ben Hall
advised seems nice but quite expensive. And maybe overcomplete for
me. Have you got it yourself?

There was a clear advise on the "Brass supersection", disappointing
in one word.

Thanks Paul for your advise about Computer Music Mag Issue 60.
I will have a search.

George, about the Memphis cd, I think it is too much riffs for me and
too little plain sounds of the instruments. Am I the only one in the
whole sample world who likes to make his own riffs and melodies?

Indeed I think the Sam horns that Julie advised are great but for an
other purpose. Not for jazzy or funky stuff.

I seem to be a troublesome guy...
Keep on advising.
Rob.

I have QLB, and it's not bad---but not great. I'd have to say the saxes are
downright awful. One of the better pop brass libraries I've had over the
years came from an old EIII library produced by Northstar that I used to
use off of floppies with my EMAX!. I'm not sure what, if any, updating
they've done for the newer samplers, but it might be worth checking out.

Most of the time they are ugly.
Seems to be a difficult instrument to sample.

I requested a demo. Thanks for the tip, Sean.

Duh... melodies? Whazzat? Don't see no frickin' melodies on _my_
Beatz & Loopz CDs...

Hey, that's us Dutch! :-)
