I don't really understand this. I've run 32 before without too much
hassle...I had to bounce tracks now and then. What do you mean by
"maxed out" at 15 instances? what happens?

What type of Mac are you using? If it is a dual processor G4 and you are
using DTDM for your native tracks, you could use the I/O plugin trick to
up your native processing power (EXS voices) signifigantly.

If not,try reducing the polyphony of each of the EXS instruments to the
maximum you need for each individual instrument to play it's assigned
part properly. That might gain you a few more EXS voices. Also, make
sure you _don't_ have an EXS or other softsynth track selected when you
are playing back. This will gain you a few cpu cycles as well.

No mattter how few voices I use, I get a dialog "IDM error -7024
while
trying to insert plug-in. DSP farm is probably maxed out." I have no
other plug-ins, except for one instance of ESB.

I suppose I was greedy, and wanted to use TDM plug-ins on seperate
instances of exs - Yes, I have a dual cpu G4 - what is the I/O trick?
Thank you.

Hi John,

Using ESB, you should instanciate the EXS in the DTDM environment. Then
route them into your TDM mixer by inserting (and defining) an ESB plugin
on a TDM aux track. This way the EXS instances are not taxing your DSP
farms (other than for the ESB instances) but are taxing your native CPU
power instead. Again, what Mac are you using? If it is a dual CPU G4,
you can use the I/O trick to up your cpu power and increase your EXS
count substantially.

You can only do so via the ESBs on your TDM aux objects. You can route a
maximum of 4 separate stereo outs from your DTDM mixer into your TDM
mixer via four separate TDM aux objects with four separate ESB
instantiations. Beware though.... these ESB instances are very DSP hungry.

>Yes, I have a dual cpu G4 - what is the I/O trick?

Instantiate an I/O plugin on any given track. Make sure to set it's in
and out definitions to something other than the default ---- setting.
Then bypass the plugin so it is doing nothing. By virtue of having the
I/O plugin on it, this track will now be forced by Logic to use the
first processor. Try this on your sixteenth and higher EXS instruments.

Eli, can you be so kind to explain to me about that i/o plug trick in
DP G4 in steps? i can't get it work

Did i need to do it in X 10.2.8 + LogicP 6.3.1 to get 2 processors full
power or is it only a os9 trick?
Thanks in advance

Juanje

This I/O trick is so important, Emagic should really include it in their
documentation. I don't know about OS X, but it definitely works in OS 9.
I've seen it with my own eyes.

Make sure you're preference for dual CPU use is enabled in your
preferences under your audio driver. Insert an I/O plugin on any given
audio track, instrument, or bus. Make sure to open the plugin and
actually set the in and out definitions. Then bypass the plugin. This
will shift the load to the first CPU instead of the second CDP which is
used as a default for audio processing. Logic needs to be playing though
for this to happen. When the transport is stopped, the I/O trick does
nothing.

The reason it works is beacause Logic is coded to have live input
objects handled by the first processor (as well as graphics, midi, and
the currently selected audio instrument). Using this I/O plugin forces
the object in question to be treated as a live input object.
