[LAM] Using a second Mac with Logic as a sound module - GigaStudio style

[LAM] Using a second Mac with Logic as a sound module - GigaStudio style

2003-11-20 by Damir

Hi,

I just purchased a G5. I'd like to use my old G4 as a 'sound module', running another
version of Logic and using my existing EXS sound library as one would use a
GigaStudio - triggering the sounds on the G4 from the G5 and recording that MIDI
info on the Logic running on the G5. Sounds simple enough. I've done this with the
GigaStudio and Logic, and it works like a charm.

The problem is, I can't get it to work with the current setup. The problem is that the
G4 Logic will only play the sounds from the Audio Instrument that is currently
selected in the Arrange window. If i have an EXS instrument on MIDI channel 1 loaded
with a piano sound, and an EXS instrument on MIDI channel 2 loaded with a string
sound, and I record a part for each instrument in Logic on the G5, when I play those
parts back, only the instrument currently selected on the G4 will sound.

I have tried patching the physical input object directly to the Audio Instruments, I've
tried using the channel splitter, I've tried standing on my head and rubbing my
belly...nothing worked. At this point I'm thinking it's either so simple and obvious
that it's staring me in the face and I just don't see it, or that it can't be done on Logic.
Any ideas would be appreciated...

Correct - I tried this with G4 as the newbie & the P3 450 as
the "slave" - it doesn't work.

Done that, too...

I used profanities, personally, with equal effect...

If you were to look at your Logic Version 5 Reference addendum
manual, page 88, it says "The audio instrument track must be in
record-ready mode, when you want to play the instrument in realtime.
Only the plug-in instrument of the currently selected track can be
played."

This paragraph, buried deep in one of those excruciating reference
addenda, shot me down in flames.

The work around is to use MIDI sync, record each track on the G4 and
have them played back by the G4 with the G5 as the "master". You
would obviously have to save the song on both computers to be able to
play it back without recording audio...

Rest easy

You guys _do_ know about the I/O-plug-in trick, don't you? Cable a
Channel Splitter into max. 16 audio instruments, insert an I/O
plug-in (from the Helpers category) on all of them, and set some
input & output on all plug-ins (important). Then bypass all I/O
plug-ins. Assign a track to the Channel Splitter, and set Logic in
play mode (or play/pause). Does give some latency, but at least it
works -- you can now play up to 16 virtual instruments
simultaneously. Instead of a channel splitter you can also use a
neutral object such as a Monitor to route the same midi stream to
multiple parallel instruments (i.e. not split the incoming data by
channel). Or use a Multi-Instrument instead of a Channel Splitter.
Etc.

In case any of you missed this from one of the recent LUG Digests, here is a
post that details how to use a second mac as a "slave" EXS 24 player:

You can do this and it works very well.
In the Environment:

From Physical Input – draw a single connection from output #1 to Channel
Splitter
input #1.
Draw 16 sequential connections from Channel Splitter #1 to 16 sequential
Audio
Instrument Tracks.
Insert an EXS24mkII into each Audio Instrument Track.
To each Audio Instrument track insert an I/O plug-in.
(Stereo>Logic>Helper>I/O).
When the I/O Plug-in pops up on the screen, assign any bus to its output (1
-2, for
instance) and assign another bus to its input (1-2, for instance). Then put
 the plug-in
into BYPASS mode. This forces Logic to treat this channel as a live input,
thereby
eliminating any latency that would otherwise occur. Make sure each channel
in Logic
is set to receive on sequential individual MIDI channels, not set to ALL.
Record enable
all channels. It seems to work with the channels not record enabled too,
just not for
the MachFive channel (if you want to setup that sampler as well).

Repeat this entire setup adding more Channel Splitters each with 16 Audio
Instrument
tracks. (Draw a single cable from the Physical Input output #2 to Channel
Splitter #2,
then another cable from the Physical Input output #3 to Channel Splitter #3,
etc.)

Put Logic into PLAY mode (create a 2 bar loop).

In my setup, I have G5 #1 running Digital Performer under DAE (in AudioMIDI
setup, I
created different MIDI Devices that represent G5 #2 running Logic – one
device for
each group of 16 MIDI channels).

That's it!

On a Macintosh G5 Dual 2 Ghz I've so far setup 48 EXS24mkIIs, plus an
instance of
MachFive (playing 16 channel

Thanks a bunch, Eli. I just saw it there. It's exactly the info I was
looking for. I'll check
it out later on today.

Cheers,

Damir

Thanks Hendirk. I did not know about the I/O plug-in trick. Now I do. Thanks a bunch
for the info.

Is it possible to share the Logic key between two mac ?

Thanks in advance.
