I'm trying to convert some akai cdroms but the exs24 isn't reading them at all. I open the akai convert window then put in the cdrom and nothing happens. When I switch applications to the finder I get told the mac os can't read it etc(of course). Is there any trick to this. I have converted akai cdroms in the past successfully. Thanks.

Hi If you are using osx 10.3 then the akai convert don't work, Emagic nows about it and are working on a solution. Just a "heads up." If you are the owner of Sam Products (horns, trombones, trumpets) please note that even the EXS updates you download may not be seen properly in your menu. You need to go to your Sam folders in the Sampler Instrument Folder and make sure all the names have the ".exs" extension. Some names may have been to long, so the ".exs" got cut off. You can fix this by shortening the name and adding ".exs" at the end. And then you should see it in your EXS24 menu. Gary Pozner

I just converted them off the CDs using CDXtract and they seem to work fine. Any advantages to the Web EXS progs? What I found with using either the web lot or the EXS converter is that you get a lot of options in one big folder and finding things was not all that easy. In using CDXtract, I set up distinct folders for each subcategory and it made getting to the program I wanted much quicker i.e. Main(close) / keyswitches, Main(close) / Modwheel X-fades. Another HUGE problem when you do any kind of reorganization with Project Manager or Redmatica¹s EXS Manager is the sample names for Close, Medium and Far miked instruments are identical. So in reorganizing it is possible to mix far samples with near and really mess things up. What I do is keep each distance set in separate folders, both programs and samples. That way you can organize or relink using specific target folders and keep things in order. Don¹t make the mistake of trying to relink or reorganize the whole library at once! Disastah! [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Dear James et al, The biggest advantage is the use of the "release samples." Meaning after you let go of the horn you will hear a natural decay. Otherwise it is pretty much the same. I fell in love with the Sam Horns when I first got them, did a big soundtrack where I used them on every cue. And now I swear I here a difference between the exs24 update and the original giga version. SO I have gone back and reconverted my giga version and I use that. SO I guess "one man's ceiling is another man's floor." Gary Pozner
