exsp24

2004-03-06 by Ben Cohen

I just got my copy of Logic Express, and I have to say that so far I'm pretty impressed.
I have only had one issue, which is that soundfont import does not seem to work in
exsp24. I activated the demo for exs24mkII, and it worked fine in that, so I know
there's nothing wrong with the .sf2 files. I searched the archives, and it seems like 2
other people had similar problems, but no one ever responded to them. Thanks in
advance.

My guess would be that this might be a limitation of the EXSP. After
all, converting a soundfont is, in a sense, creating a new EXS
instrument -- and the EXSP can't create new EXS instruments, since
it's just a player (hence the P in EXSP).

This would make sense, except that it plainly states in the documentation that it is
supposed to work. When I go to the options menu in exsp, and select soundfont
convert, it says something to the effect of "place the .sf2 file in the sampler
instruments directory and select it from the pull-down menu, and it will automatically
be converted. When I try to do this, the dialog box that normally says "converting
soundfont instrument bank" pops up for a fraction of a second, but goes away before
it gets started. The soundfont file then becomes grayed out in the pulldown menu.

I've never had any probs converting Soundfont files with my EXSP, so it's
definitely not a feature restriction. What is the problem with the EXSP
converted instruments?

I do it the same way. I don't use soundfont convert. The sf file needs to
be in the Sampler Instruments folder. The first time I ever select it,
there's a quick convert and it's ready to play. Some soundfonts are so
small that a fraction of a second is all the conversion takes. But it
should then be loaded and ready to play.

Check the Sampler Instruments folder to see if there is a ".exs" version of
the sf2 file. If not, then that's weird and I can't help you. If it is
there, you might try playing every note on your keyboard to make sure that
it isn't mapped out for just a couple of notes, but the big clue that
something is wrong is that it is grayed out. That doesn't happen to me.
I'm on OS9 with LAP 5.3. Does the name of the soundfont show up in green on
the EXSP like the other instruments immediately after conversion?

No, after I select a soundfont, the progress bar flashes for a fraction of a second
(regardless of how big the soundfont is), and then no instrument is selected (it shows
... in the instrument window). And the soundfont is grayed out.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
