I'd like to hear from anyone using the Garritan orchestra samples. Do they load in as AU's on OSX or do they have to be converted? I'd really like to know if these can be a useful addition for semi classical/classical music. Thanks.

Sam,
They load as AUs in OS X, and work great in Logic. They are a very
useful addition to EXS for classical and other types of music. I highly
recommend it, especially given the price!!!

Thanks, Ned, It seemed Garritan was heavy into Giga, so I was wondering . . . Ned Bouhalassa wrote: > Sam, > > They load as AUs in OS X, and work great in Logic. But initially he was into Giga because when he came out with Garritan Strings, Kontakt didn't even exist yet. At this point I think he's pretty committed to both Giga and Kontakt. Kontakt has the obvious advantage that he can package up a player with the library and save users a lot of money, while also making it simple to use. With GPO, it makes more sense for him to release as Kontakt version with built in player. For $249 you get both the player and the library.. Wow.. -steve

Sam,
The GPO uses a specially-made Kompakt player, kind of a smaller,
player-only version of the Kontakt sampler. You call it up in Logic
like any other AU synth or sampler.
Best,
Ned

Cyril,
I would suggest you visit the GPO Forum over at Northern Sounds, where
you will find lots of information about Mac users' experience with GPO.
Of course, you can also visit the EWQL forum there to read up on QLSO:

Thanks, Steve: I guess this means I get the Kontakt version for LApro and drop it in the appropriate folders and the EXS sampler shows it as .exs files. . . Cyril, je t'en prie!
This was not a strange answer at all. Perhaps you have had a bad
experience at Northern Sounds, but I, on the other hand, have read all
kinds of postings, good and bad, related to products by Garritan and
East West. The only reason I suggested you visit there instead of
answering directly is because I have found that there are some real
differences in experience, even between users with the same computer
and OS configuration.
If you know anything about me from my contributions both here and on
other lists/forums, you'll know that I'm a straight shooter.
As for your initial question, my experience with GPO has been very
good. I do not suffer from some of the problems that have been
reported, like the graphic bug. OTHO, I do not use Kontakt, and that
has been a source of problems for other Logic/OS X users. Do note that
I have not 'pushed' GPO very hard, limiting myself to maybe 5 or 6
instrument lines at a time in Logic, because I use other librarires in
conjunction with GPO, like GOS, SAMs, etc.
The only time where I will not 'talk' is when I am beta testing a
product. I bought GPO like you.
Au plaisir de te lire, libre de toute censure,
Ned

> The GPO uses a specially-made Kompakt player, kind of a smaller, > player-only version of the Kontakt sampler. You call it up in Logic > like any other AU synth or sampler. > Yep... And as I am learning (since I just bought GPO yesterday), the kontakt mini-player included with GPO plays back EVERYTHING that kontakt is capable of. So you can use this player or you can use kontakt if you already own kontakt..your choice. The samples will work the same through either with all the filtering and performance related stuff. If you own kontakt you have the ability to do some tweaking or perhaps see how they set things up. GPO will NOT work properly with Kompakt as Kompakt does not fully support all the stuff built into the GPO library. The mini kontakt player that comes with GPO does not yet support DFD. If you want DFD you have to get kontakt. There is a kontakt upgrade available. But Gary Garritan and his techs keep saying over and over that they have had nothing but problems with DFD so they don't even wanna go there right now. They don't recommend or support using it (at least for now). That being said, you can load a whole GPO orchestra into 1GB of RAM or less. You should hear some of the demos people are doing with this library. Its definitely a very capable orchestration tool...and the price is mind numbingly low..

I'm told that people using full kontakt with GPO initially had some issues with DFD..but that DFD is supposedly fixed better now. Its hard to say for sure because most of the people on the GPO forum just use the mini-kontakt player which does not provide DFD. As far as crashing, I sure hope not, but we'll see. Fortunately I own DP4 also and apparantly GPO is working flawlessly in DP4. Gary Garritan said somewhere in one of the threads that Logic 6.4 may fix some of the issues causing problems with kontakt. (sigh). So there you have it.. But just to clarify, GPO does NOT use Kompakt. It uses Kontakt, and comes bundled with a mini play-only kontakt player. Kontakt has more performance capabilities than Kompakt. So anyway, for GPO to work, you need either the Kontakt player (not kompakt) to be fixed or if you own Kontakt..and if it has been fixed, then you can use that with GPO as well...

I don't own EXS (yet)...so I don't know that much about it yet. But does EXS read Kontakt sample files? Plus I think the GPO files are encrypted somehow to only work with kontakt. Even if you can read the files in EXS..I don't think its going to work right for you that way. GPO is designed to be a black box that just works. But inside there is a LOT going on. Different controller messages and key velocity, etc..are all being used to control various parameters of the sound which in all liklihood will not translate to an EXS sampler. They did a lot of tweaking, using kontakt programming features to make a 2GB sample library sound like a 20GB library.. I really think you would lose that with EXS... That being said, it includes its own AU plugin that you drop into your plugins folder and instantly have an orchestra available. Or if you own kontakt, you can use that and point it at the GPO sample files..and will work exactly the same, except you'd have access to the parameters to tweak as you want. Of course, if you're used to tweaking with EXS and perhaps automatation...well that just isn't there yet. The other thing I would do is send off a message to support@... and talk to Garth about what his product can translate. I'm sure he knows all about GPO and he can tell you for sure if you can translate 100% to EXS. Cheers

The whole forum has a positive tone to it..which you can agree with or disagree with, but I find it refreshing... -steve

Thanks for the clarification, Steve!
It seems that I made a mistake in my reply yesterday. All this time
that I've had GPO, I was under the (false) impression that it was
Kompakt. Now we know that it's a special Kontakt.
Gee, I wish NI would find other names for these two players/samplers!!

Steve: I don't have kontkt and I'm new to Logic. I would like to forward this to Gary Garritan and see what his response is about using the GPO in Logic Audio Pro. Would this be o.k.with you? So trying to use GPO with Logic and the exs sampler is not possible? At 01:24 PM 03/12/2004, you wrote: >So trying to use GPO with Logic and the exs sampler is not possible? I don't have GPO, but I know that it uses many of the advanced tools and programming I'm familiar with from GOS, and trying to do raw sample imports into EXS and re-create those programs would be a nightmare. You can, of course, use GPO in addition to EXS since it's nothing more than another VSTI as far as Logic is concerned. (or AU, or whatever--I'm still on OS9)
2004-03-12 by Ned Bouhalassa
It's not possible, as the sample data is 'locked' for use with Kontakt
and the special GPO Kontakt player only.
This is a growing tendency which you can see in virtual instruments
like;
Culture, Stylus, Trilogy, Atmosphere, BFD, Candy, EWQLO, StormDrum,
etc, etc.
Ned
PS: In the meantime, if your EXS is really hungry for orchestral
instruments, you can always buy VSL, SAM, QL Brass, GOS, etc.

I actually already knew that, I just forgot. Thanks for the reminder. So bottom line is, unless Garritan releases an EXS version, you are stuck with using kontakt plugin. Due to licensing issues, I don't think he will release on anything other than Kontakt for quite a while.

Cyril,
This may have to do with Copy Protection. Perhaps EW feels that if
their sample collection is converted to EXS, it will be more attractive
to upload to pirate servers, because many people have cracked versions
of EXS.
Do you think Bernard (who I respect completely, btw) would get a
positive response if he tried the same thing with Spectrasonics
instruments, Yellow Tools' Culture, Candy, FXpansion's BFD, etc?
Sure it's a shame that we don't have the same situation as we used to
when AKAI was the standard, but then again, if you put yourself in the
position of the manufacturers, you've got to admit that they had to do
_something_ to protect themselves a bit more (yes, I'm sure that there
are cracks for everything).
I'm sad to hear about the censorship.
Best,
Ned

Cyril,
I use the built-in special Kontakt AU player that comes with GPO. Works
for me in Logic 6.3.2 and OS X 10.3.2. Note, however, that I have a
Dual 2Ghz G5.
Ciao,
Ned

Hi There is a way to have a plug-ins in the EXS to protect your library. VSL is using the Legato tool ;o) It is quite a job to copy 65 GB !
