Downloaded free soundfonts>no sound?

2004-03-12 by choros15

Hi,

I've downloaded some free soundfonts from Hammersound.net.How do soundfonts work
in the exs24?I placed them in my Sampler Instruments Folder and they show up in the
exs24 menu but there is no sound and no audio file in the editor under "zone".The
Hammersound site mentions nothing of having to download samples or wave files to work
with these soundfonts, how do they work?

   Thanks,

  Jay

In the main EXS interface, just pick a soundfont-file as if it was a
normal EXS-instrument (i.e. click-hold on the big black field between
the Edit and Option buttons). If you do, the EXS should
automatically start converting the soundfont. Samples extracted from
the soundfont will be put in the "SoundFont Samples" folder inside
the Logic application folder and can, if you want, be moved to a
dedicated audio drive afterwards. The instrument files will be
stored in the "Sampler Instruments" folder and should remain there.

    Hendrik,

I was told on www.osxaudio.com that this is a known bug in OSX but word is it works in
OS9.I'm doing as you say but the soundfont instruments have no sound and no audio file
shows up in the sample editor under "zone".I'm getting no more info from anywhere on
this and was hoping someone had a fix or work around.I can't talk to tech support until
Monday to confirm that this is indeed a "bug".I've read somewhere that this is a problem in
the exsp24 OSX version but nothing of the exs24 bug.Is there a fix in the pro upgrade or
does it just not work?Is there a problem with the free soundfonts on
www.hammersound.net ? Is it just me or do others have this problem? Can I use something
like CD extract to get the soundfonts to work in the exs24?Any info even to confirm this
problem will help me get through the weekend without going crazy.Nothing works as it
should it seems....:-(

    Thanks,

   Jay

Ah.. OSX... Okay, that could be. I don't use X, and it indeed works
in 9. Afraid I can't help you then, since I know nothing about the
traps & pitfalls of Logic in X.

  Hendrik,

  Thanks anyway,
I have a dual bootable OS9/OS10 G4 and am willing to try to work in OS9 to see if the
soundfonts work but haven't a clue as to how to boot in OS9.I'm going to start looking
into to this.Any info?Do I have to install Logic on OS9 as well and how much trouble would
it be to switch back and forth between OS's in the same project?I got the Dual bootable
mac thinking I may have to do this until OSX worked out all the bugs.Maybe it's time to
try.Could I use all the available free VST's I find also....getting intrigued:-)...and scared!!
   Thanks,

  Jay

Uhm... If I'm not mistaken, there's something like "startup disk"
somewhere. You should be able to pick the OS9 system folder here. I
know I did it once on a friend's machine, and it was rather
straightforward... Long ago though...

>Do I have to install Logic on OS9 as well

Of course -- if you want to run Logic in 9, you need a Logic-9 version.

You don't have to. Just boot in 9, install Logic-9, launch Logic and
use the EXS to convert the soundfonts. Then move the soundfont
sampler instruments (i.e. the converted exs instruments) from the
Logic-9 Sampler Instruments folder to the Logic-X Sampler Instruments
folder. Move the samples (in the Soundfont Samples folder) to some
logical place, and restart in OSX. No need to keep using Logic-9 at
all.

On the topic of using the same project in both Logic's: in the LUG
there have been some reports of Logic-X not properly importing
Logic-9 projects, so I'm not sure if you really want to go that
route...

Yes!!They work in OS9! I finally got it and I hope they fix this in the pro update.

Wow!!What a pain in the ass! I figured it out.I have to download the soundfonts from
www.Hammersound.net in OSX,because I apparently don't have the proper software
installed in OS9 to open the files. Then I drag them to them to my(newly installed Logic
OS9) Sampler Instruments Folder.I then boot into OS9>open Logic 6.0 in OS9>open the
EXS24>the soundfonts convert just fine>then open the OS9 Sampler Instruments
Folder>drag the newly made exs instruments to my OSX Sampler Instruments
Folder>reboot into OSX>boot Logic 6.3.3 in OSX open the exs24 sampler in a
song>choose the new exs24 instruments I've created>find out they sound like shit:-)>go
back and try some more!!:-)....What a day:-)I didn't configure(get 0S9 drivers?)for my
Radium 61 keyboard or my Firewire 410 for OS9 yet because they work in OSX and I didn't
want to mess that up,so I can only test the soundfonts in OS9 with the onscreen keyboard
and the G4 tower speaker for now but I'm thinking I'm going to like working in OS9!! It's
nice to have a choice.I'm new to computers in general(not just Macs or OSX/9 so I don't
really care what OS I have as long as things actually work the way my manual says they're
supposed and it seems OS9 will be good to fall back on until the OSX stuff gets fixed.Plus I
can't wait to try out all the free VST plugs in OS9 and such!

    Thanks for your help,

   Jay
