Reducing Sample Load Time in EXS24/mkII

Reducing Sample Load Time in EXS24/mkII

2004-04-08 by lolhardman

Hi - I've just purchased Logic and have been very happy with it on
the whole. One problem 'm having though it with the exs sampler and
the time it take to laod samples.

For sample storage, I've got a iomega firewire drive hooked up to my
mac. I'm assuming I need to have exs preferences set to search for
samples on "external volumes", since they are on my external firewire
drive.
The problem is that they take so long to load, 45 seconds to a minute
per patch. Is there any way tp recuding the search/load time? I'd
rather not put them on my internal hard drive... is there another
solution?

Thanks

Yes, you should in any case do that.

However, if you're loading your EXS patches for the first time, it might
take quite a bit longer to find the appropriate samples as the EXS doesn't
allready know where they are.
Sample file locations inside EXS files are treated "dynamically", which
means that once the EXS has found the samples for the patch you were
loading, the sample locations will be written into the EXS file. As a result
of this, the next time you're loading your samples, the process should be
way faster as the EXS doesn't have to search anymore. Btw, for that very
same reason EXS patch files should not have a read only attribute.

In case you're using an external device for your samples, make sure that the
external drive will allways have the same drive letter (I don't know the
equivalent for drive letters on Macs yet). If there's one thing you want
it's your EXS samples remaining at the same place.
For me that's more than enough reason to keep them on an internal HD.
Actually, even if my sample partition isn't even halfway filled yet, it's
the largest partition in my computer, the audio partition is way smaller - I
expect my sample collection to grow continuously while I regularly backup
recorded audio material.

Sascha

They don't take 45 seconds to load, it's taking that long to find the
samples.

If you move the sample files from where they originally were, then the
instruments will point to samples that don't exist. The EXS then goes
looking for them, and when it finds them it writes the new sample location
to the instrument you are trying to load.

(I'm sure this must be in the FAQ somewhere)

If you have a ton of instruments where the samples are in the wrong place,
use EXS manager or the "next instrument" trick to resolve your instruments.

Once your samples are in the correct place, they will load very quickly.

If you get EXSmanager from redmatica, it will reorg all your files ;o)

Yes. The EXS Manager software from Redmatica does exactly this. And it does
it VERY well. Check out www.redmatica.com.

It's well worth the money IMO.

I agree completely, particularly if you have the Vienna library or
other large sample collections.

You can also use Logic's Project Manager (PM) to resolve the .exs
instrument files - then they load very quickly after that. The PM is
v-e-r-y slow however.......

One thing I know is that in my case sample load up time does not
speed up after the first time I load them. No, nothing has been
moved. I wonder though, Sascha, if my sample instruments are set
to "read only." This would explain matters. My studio is in mothballs
so I can't check this out, however.
