Mac AV & EXS

Mac AV & EXS

2004-04-17 by Roland Barrett

Friends,

When I used to occasionally use EXS24 on my older G4 400 Mhz Mac, I
simply used the Mac AV method of outputting sound to the console. For my
needs, it worked ok. Now, I've upgraded to a somewhat newer G4, 1 gig,
still using 9.2.2. And...the Mac AV signal is unusuable--static,
distortion, computer noise when clicking on menus, etc. 2 questions: Is
this fixable? If not, could you guys recommend the most economical
solution? If we're talking digital interfaces, I wouldn't really be using
them for anything other than this, so I'd sure like to keep the cost down as
much as possible. Are there any which are both good and cheap? Thanks in
advance!

Roland

LAP, version 4.7.1
EXS version ?

(I know...old software...but I sure works when I occasionally need
it...until now)

Hi Roland,

The easiest and cheapest way to fix this is by connecting a 'ground
loop isolator' between the audio output of your Mac and the console.
If you use the inputs of your Mac as well, then you should use such a
device there as well, but I would advise to try the output first and
leave the input disconnected.

Most cheap ground loop isolators come in a smal enclosure with two
little transformers in it and fixed leads.
See, for example:

You could of course also get an audio interface from, for example,
M-Audio.

Regards,
Ernst.
