EXS 24 Logic Sampler Users Group

I'm quite fluent in Logic, but mainly on the audio side. Recently I've
been getting into the EXS, and I'm digging the possibilities it has.
And I have two questions for you guys who know it well.

1). Sidechain. I'm able to get other audio instruments to work in
sidechain mode (like Zebra, for instance), but haven't been able to
figure out the proper combination to get it to work in the EXS. What
do I need to change in the Matrix to get this to work.. do I have to
set up anything new in the matrix, or simply change existing Sources
to Sidechain? Any quick turorial pointers would be greatly appreciated.

2). I'm using a D50 as controller at the moment. Every time I RELEASE
C#3 on the D50, it puts Logic into External Sync. It doesn't toggle
the sync mode, but just turns it ON if it's on Internal. I can record
a sequence, including the C#3 which will turn External on, but when I
play the sequence back, the sequence itself doesn't do this.. it's
only when it is played from the controller. When I look at the
recorded events, all that I see is a Note Off.. I'm quite confident
that I've just got something set up improperly, but being new to the
whole MIDI thing, I can't figure it out.

From what you are describing, it sounds like you have a "midi remote" key
command accidentally assigned to this function. Look in your key commands
window and see if there is a midi remote command associated with this
specific function. If so, delete it.

As an alternative, just look under the global options menu at the bottom and
see if "midi remote" functionality is enables or not. If it is, and you
don't need it for anything else; just toggle it off.



PS: As far as sidechaing: I use it with ES1, Evoc, the compressor, and noise
gate all the time; but I have never used it with the EXS 24. I'd also be
interested in hearing some ideas of how people use it specifically with the
EXS 24 and in what context. I understand "how" it works; just not sure what
some creative uses of it would be.

Not sure what you mean exactly...  If you want to use the audio 
output of the EXS as input to a sidechain of some effect plug-in, you 
might want to read FAQ 22.6.  If you want to run external audio into 
the EXS (much like you can run audio through the ES1 filter) then 
you're out of luck, since no such thing can be done.  Not a problem 
though, since it's trivial to build an EXS instrument that plays the 
required audio _as a sample_, and then use the EXS 
filter/modulation/... on it.

Eli, thanks for your response. I had checked key commands before to
see if there was an assignment for External Sync and the only one
enabled for it was the default "Y" key. But I found that C#3 WAS
assigned to Tap Tempo. So I disabled that, and all is good now. Thanks
for your suggestion!

Hendrik, thanks for clearing up my misunderstanding on sidechain for
the EXS. I don't understand why the EXS would include a sidechain
function if it isn't possible to use it.. other Logic plugs which
don't have sidechain capability have no option to even select a
sidechain mode, so I thought that since EXS does, it must be possible
to use it to run audio through to possibly trigger the loaded sample.
But I guess not. I was trying to shortcut the old Audio-to-Score method.

Hmm... now that you mention it -- there _is_ a sidechain option in 
the matrix's popup menus, isn't there (too lazy to check, on a Sunday 
morning :)?  Never gave it much thought, but it makes one wonder 
indeed what such an option does there...

Ah, I see.  No, that won't work, I'm afraid.  Would be a cool option 
indeed, to have audio trigger the EXS.
