smpte sync - off topic ?

smpte sync - off topic ?

2004-10-27 by Daniel Bal

Hi,

I've got a tape with smpte on - connected the signal
to my unitor 8. I would like to have logic listen to
the signal. Checked framerate and type, putted logic
in ext sync. But it doesn't seem to work ?? Is there a
way to see if the unitor receives the signal and how
can I get this thing to work ?

Thnx
Daniel

Quantize

2004-10-27 by jojje

I was just wondering about the groove or feel when you quantize in
logic! People talk about the AKAI MPC2000XL sampler and that it´s got a
really good feel or swing! How can you achieve that in logic?

Thanks in advance

I think that's more like a question for the LUG, but however -
there's lots of quantization options, you should just fool around
with the extended parameter box to see what they're actually doing.
In case you want to "copy" the groove of an MPC2000 I could only
recommend trying to find some loops of it, load them into Logic and
use the "audio to MIDI groove template" function of Logic's time and
pitch machine.
Alternatively you may want to load them into any loop slicing tool
(such as Phatmatik Pro, ReCycle or Intakt) and export the MIDI groove
from there into Logic, then make a template out of that.

In addition to the statement below, which is a really good/answer
solution. The main thing to note, is that it is the inaccuracies or
humanness of the MPC that gives it such a good feel. Linn drums had
their own feel, Roland's which were more perfect had their own feel. As
do actual drummers. I.e. if you analyzed the groove of a drummer you
love you would find that he/she is all over the beat. Maybe the kick
slightly ahead, snare a little behind, etc.

Try this. On an MPC (or any external drum sequencer) and pick a sound
like hi hat or rim shot and do a one bar pattern with the sound playing
EVERY 16th note. You will have a one bar pattern with 16 hits in it.
Cable midi out from device to midi in Logic and record the midi notes
into logic using the sending device's midi clock as master. Record 4
bars into Logic so the midi clock stabilises. In Logic, cut the 4th bar
so you have a one bar region in Logic with 16 notes in it. Do NOT
quantise it. Select this region and invoke "make midi Groove Template".

You now have made an exact copy of the MPC's groove to apply to midi
tracks within Logic. Go back and repeat this process each time changing
the quantise in the MPC to different swing values etc. and you can
build up a whole groove template library in logic mimicking the feel
characteristics of any device.

Thanks for all the help!really appreciate it! Especially your tip there
Paul! Is it true that people buy an mpc just because of its groove or feel!
isnt there any other reason? Because if groove templates is something you
can import into logic and someone puts the template on the internet for
downloading , then it would seem pretty unessecary to buy an mpc for 1000$!!

You know you guys could just save yourself alot of trouble and download
the MPC Groove Templates from the yahoo Logic Users Group. If youre on
this list might as well join that one too hehe.. :)
