EXSP24 and custom samples

EXSP24 and custom samples

2004-12-08 by pcoelho377

I'm using Logic Express 7.
I've recorded some samples and woud like to now map out and
play back via a keyboard thru exsp24mkII (part of the LE7 package).
I'm new to this so bear with me, but there just
doesn't seem to be enough info in the manual to help me do this
(play back custom samples). Is exsp limited? Is there another tool?

Would someone tell me how to do this or point me to another
rescource please?

Thanks for your help.

peace,

In EXSP, the "P" is meant for "player",wich means that you cannot create
your own "sampler instruments".
The easiest solution (and cheapest!) is to upgrade your EXSP24 to EXS24
with wich you can create your instruments by opening the "edit" window.
To upgrade you will have to contact your logic dealer, cause you'll have to
make an exchange of CD ROM,you cannot download the upgrade.
I did that myself and had to pay ~140 wich is not much if you consider that
you'll then possess one of the most powerfull soft sampler.

Thanks for your reply!!

Welp, I guess there is always something your dealer won't tell you about the great software
your about to buy. Ah well.

However, where there is a will, there is way. I simply created my samples. Found a EXSP
patch that has patches I would rarely use (I backed up the original files just in case) and
replaced the samples in that directory with the ones I need, having renamed my samples
to match the original names and viola, I now can trigger my custom samples under that
patch.

This may not the be easiest, but is indeed cheap and it gets the job done. Alas however, if
I wanted full control for the playback of my custom sample, envelops and cycling etc. I'm
limited to the patches already created.

Good thinking! But you don't have to give up the original patch. Just
rename it.

Hmm, well here's a request for the group. Would a kind EXS24 user please post a generic
instrument that is merely an instrument with no programing other than place holders for
custom samples. Those of us with EXSP could then simply propagate the sample directory
for the generic instrument with our own custom samples for play back accross the
keyboard.

Any help would be appreciated.

peace,

I could give it a shot.

How would you prefer your samples layed out on the keyboard, how many,
and with which names? Do you need them one shot and with pitch
disabled?

It depends on how you want to use this generic instrument: pitched
sounds, drums or as a trigger for sound tracks and effects.

Way cool!!

Let's just try triggering tracks and SFX. Perhaps we could have each note on a keyboard be
a different sample starting with C0 and go to C2. 25 samples in all.

If possible, no sample duration limit. (one could put in a full song or a short blip as
needed per trigger key)

Could G1 thru C2 be looping? That is, when the end of the sample is reached it will loop as
long as the key is held down or sustain pedal is depressed? If this is sample length
dependent, then don't bother.

As for a naming convention, for the samples, how about SFX_C0.aif (or wav) then
SFX_C#0.aif, SFX_D0.aif, SFX_D#0.aif, etc. Just as long as we can pre determine where the
sample will be played when we give that sample the name

What is the requirement for the .exs file and the sample directory? Do they need to pre
defined or can they be changed as long as they match?

I.e., <genericSFX.exs> and sample directory <genericSFX> with the sample convention
inside the sample directory. The goal could be to have the user simply change the name of
the .exs file and matching directory so that more intruments may be defined with different
samples in each.

Thanks for your input.

peace,

Some friend of mine is owning Logic Express 6 and constantly building his
own patches for the EXSP.
The EXS editor apparently is part of Logic Express too (I wonder why...).
There's just two downsides:
- You can't listen to your patches in realtime but need to reload them each
time you change something.
- Emapple might have changed this with version 7, so maybe the EXS editor
isn't part of Logic Express anymore. I don't know about that.

As said, usually, with all previous versions you could just build your own
sampler instruments without owning either EXS or EXSP.
