need my old akai floppies loaded into EXS !!

need my old akai floppies loaded into EXS !!

2005-05-10 by highflightfoundation

Hi everyone

Even though I have just become the proud owner of a rev.B dual2 G5,
and have been carefully copying my EXS library over from my G4,
I feel I don't want to discard my oldest sample library of all...
which consists of a shoebox full of 3 1/2" floppies from akai S1000/S3000 days.

I think of the long nights spent in studios, in the early 90's, carefully editing and
arranging each waveform, having often recorded the sound myself first.... and realise there
are probably some real gems in there, even if the bandwidth was a bit limited..

so my question is... do any of you know if it possible to read such floppies directly into
EXS24 using a USB floppy drive on my G5 ?
If I could just load the samples in I would be happy, but sometimes the bank info would be
useful too, because of tuning data etc...

I see such floppy drives for sale for about £25 now,
and suspect i will find even cheaper ones around.

any tips would be very welcome.
If I find anything outstanding on these disks, i may post something to the files list for you
all !

What would prob. be much more interesting to some of you , is that sometime soon-ish,
i intend to make some EXS multisamples of my trusty old OCTAVE CAT mono synth,
which has real old school analogue character , i will certainly post some of that to the files
list, when I find the time, hopefully soon...

anyway, thanks to you all for all your tips and info over the last few years,
I have been lurking quietly here for quite some time, while my G4/350 slowly fell apart,
but now.... It's time to get busy :-)

peace

Nope, but there's a workaround.

Donate it to Hollow Sun. That's perfect for him.

BTW, the Kitten was my first synth. I LOVED them.

So, to get the samples of floppy. You need to sign a pact with Satan; in
other words, find a PC. Mac weren't designed to do "illegal" things, so you
need the PC.

Once your conscience is seared enough to actually use the forbidden devil
demon computer system that crashes every 3.25376 minutes and always
corrupts the kernel files, download AkaiDisk from the Chicken Systems web
site (under downloads).

If you are using XP get the Boot disk, because to use AkaiDisk you need to
use Win98, and the boot disk allows you to boot up in Win98 so you can use
AkaiDisk (also called ADisk).

I won't elaborate here, I'll let you just read the instructions - if you
have any questions contact me via email or call if you want.

(I'm kidding about the PC, BTW...)

I know this was meant as humorous, it was not funny. I paid good money for
my Mac version of Translator. I have gone to the web site many times, have
looked for news of an updated Translator for the EXS Mark II. For the Mac. I
would need both hands to count the number of times I have signed up for the
"Newsletter" so I could learn relevant news - and have never ever received
any. Meanwhile the Windows version gets revision after revision.

You always seem to have time to update the Windows version.

For All I know, all the features I always wanted in Translator are finally
there but I have not been informed of this. Instead I read nerdy humor as
quoted above. Garth, in case you have not figured it out yet, this is a list
principally for users of the Emagic EXS, which for the last few years has
been Mac only.

Sorry, my day job (physician) demands use of Windows gear and it truly
sucks. I use it and sometimes it even works. Macs simply work. Sorry you
feel you must support Windows over the Mac, even write little programs for
it to make it actually do something useful. Why do you hang around here? You
don't do anything for the Mac community.

And as of your posting today I have made a decision. I do not do any more
for you either.

Sincerely,

Bob Vandiver

I won't comment about Translator at all (I don't own or use it), but this is leaving me as speechless though.
You wouldn't happen to be a member of the LUG as well, wouldn't you? So, what is making you to still believe in "Macs simply work"?

Such statements are just driving me as mad as anything else.

"Macs simply work" has to be recognised not as an ontological statement - a
statement about what is - but rather as an apriori assumption. When confronted
by something which might tend to disconfirm the assumption one must simply
adjust one's perception.

I think this is really the necessary step - we PC guys really need to "get with
the program" -- surrender to the greater power of Steve and the Mac. I know you
want to.

Perhaps it would help if we used this simple phrase as a mantra. Try it. Just
sit in the lotus position for 20 minutes night and morning and repeat the magic
words "Macs simply work". (Being careful not to share this mantra with anyone
else as it may dilute its spiritual power.)

Remember the fault is not in reality but in ourselves.

Shanti.

Sorry to offend you; I just think there's more to life than what computer
you use. The persons question was one of those ironic things where a PC
needed to do the job because it required low-level access, which Macs never
provided. In that particular case, "Macs don't work." =)

>Why do you hang around here? You don't do anything for the Mac community.

Because it's an EXS-24 list, not a Mac list. PC's and Mac's are similar
systems, and EXS works the same on both. Besides, I don't use Logic on PC,
I use it on Mac all time, every day, and I know how it works very well (at
least I hope so).

>And as of your posting today I have made a decision. I do not do any more
>for you either.

See, that's the sort of response that made the original post funny in the
first place. =) There's been entire books written solely about the personal
attitudes of Mac people; BTW in a positive light.

:-) !!!

I can't do that. I've been running Macs since 1995 and I can honestly
say that they don't ever "simply" work. You have to kick their butt
and perform voodoo rituals, just like with any other computer.

Let's all repeat:
Computers simply DON'T work.

They are a plot from the negative forces to alienate us from the true
meaning of life, which is....damn...you see, I've forgotten.

Okay, back on the pavement folks, nothing to see here.

Whoever's email client/server is adding the ??SPAM?? top the subject line,
could you please take a moment to edit this out when it happens instead of
just sending the message to the list? Or configure your email to properly
recognize list messages?

This subject text is throwing off other people's spam filters (mine
included), and it's becoming very annoying.

Thank you.

You're quite correct of course.
I just hit reply out of habit.
