If the EXS loads an .exs file, and the paths are incorrect (meaning there
is no file with that name in the path that the .exs file stipulates), the
EXS will starting looking through whole drives to find the file.
You can generally tell the EXS where to look under Options - it will look
in either Local Volumes or External Volumes. I believe (not sure) that the
EXS will look through the whole drive of the incorrect path (if the drive
exists) regardless of what the options say.
So if the EXS does not find your sample, it may be because your Options are
set correctly to fine the file. Or it could be that the file name really
doesn't exist; for example, if the .exs file needs to find "brass 1.aif"
and the file is called "brass1.aif" it's going to miss it. It's got to be
exact, case insensitive.
