Best format?

Best format?

2005-09-24 by Mark Falchook

Greetings,

I'm an EXS24 newbie, so please bear with me. I'm interested in buying some
downloadable drum sounds from a particular site. When it comes to available
formats, the website says:

"24bit WAV format. Mapped for HALion, Kontakt, NN-XT and Battery."

Do any of these formats easily import into the EXS24 without any third party
conversion software? If so, which format should I buy? I know the EXS can
easily import Akai & Giga, but I wasn't sure about the above formats.

Your insight would be appreciated.

Regards,
-Mark

Without third party software, your best bet are the wav format files
for drum sounds; providing they are not velocity switch samples. You
can easily load multiple wav files at once and have the EXS
automatically map them out chromatically across the keyboard, all in
one shot.

But if they are velocity based multi samples, then it's a different
story. Unless they are all uniformly sampled across the velocity ranges
equally (in which case you can import them in kind and treat them as
groups), I don't think there is any easy way around having to manually
adjust the velocity ranges and other parameters on a sample by sample
basis.

Seriously, when it comes to drums, I highly recommend getting something in addition to the EXS. Battery 2 right now might be your
best bet.
I find drum mapping (especially velocity mapping) to be a way too laborious experience in the EXS, and as the import function is
only covering a few, rather old-ish formats (which more than often enough aren't imported properly, too), you won't have much luck
with existing libraries either.

So, to make use of the latter, you've got three choices:
- Go through the remapping nightmares.
- Buy a translator tool, such as CDxtract or Translator (having one of them might be a more or less something like a must one
day...).
- Buy a dedicated drum sampler.

If programming drums is one of the main things you're concerned about (it certainly is for me), I'd go for the last option. I simply
couldn't live without a dedicated drum sampler anymore.

Ely,

Thanks for your reply. Assuming that they are not velocity switch
samples, is it a simple drag-and-drop-onto-EXS operation? And if so,
will the samples playback at their original pitches despite what keys
they are mapped to, or will I have to manually edit the pitches?

Thanks again,
-Mark

No, not drag and drop. But it's just as easy. There is a "load multiple
samples" option under one of the menus in the EXS instrument editor.

Yes. You are presented with a dialogue box with a few options when you
load multiple samples. One of the options is to load them all in
chromatically (like a drum kit) with them all remaining at their root
pitch. So there is no additional work necessary, unless you want to
rearrange the order they are loaded in.

No.

Hi Sasha

I do a lot of beats and have been interested in Battery for a while but I¹ve
heard that NI plugins have some compatibility issues with Logic/TDM.

Is it stable? What¹s your system setup?

Thanks
Dave

To be honest, I never used any TDM system, so I can't tell you anything about that.
They're running fairly stable as AUs on the university's G5s (which I am sort of maintaining) though.

My private setup is still based on a Windows machine, mainly running Logic 5.5.1 (and I'm happy with it, too).

Sascha

Thanks for the detail Sasha. I don¹t know where I¹ve heard about NI- Logic
conflicts with TDM. I¹m interested in Battery though so I think I¹ll ask on
the Logic-TDM list.

That might be true for HTDM/RTAS versions (I'm native now), but in
Logic wouldn't you be using them routed into ESB-TDM? If so, they
will be running native just like any other AU, no?

Btw, I'd also recommend Battery 2 for drums and single-hit samples
with individual settings.

I used Kontact a bit ago under TDM and while it worked on paper and I met my
deadline, at the end of the day I didn't find it to be very stable at all
and probably would be hard pressed to install it again. Your mileage may
vary.

Max no' of EXS instruments allowed

2005-09-27 by sam sutton

Hi chaps,
There appears to be an issue with the amount/Max no' of EXS instruments
allowed in your EXS instruments folder. I am still on Logic 6 but could
anyone shed any light on this: Strangely enough they appear in the EXS
drop-down menu list within Logic but do not allow selection from this list.
My Sampler instrument collection appears to be too much for Logic..???
Thanks in advance for any light shed..
Sam

I have a light shed in the back of my house. It's a little house built for
putting in riding lawn mowers and such, I put a bunch of lights in there
for storage and now I call it my light shed.

j/k

Yeah, it's around 32,767 items that can be put in there. I'm not sure if
that includes .exs files and folder or just .exs files. I know people that
hit this limit and they've set up a shuttling system where they have 6-8
"sets" that they pull in and out via aliases.
