hard drives for samples

2006-09-13 by Julie Larson

Hi everyone,
I just had a big drive go down. It was mainly samples so it's not
as bad as it could be....but it was bad. I have a couple of
questions. What do I need to be looking for these days in a hard
drive. I want big and fast. Is USB 2 an option? Is Firewire 800
becoming obsolete. Just noticed that the new mac notebooks don't
have it.

Most of my libraries I can just reload....but I lost some samples
from the freebee instruments that Project Sam used to keep on
line....Specifically the flute effects samples and the True Strike
demo instrument samples. Does anyone have these? I really use
them a lot and would appreciate your help.

Thanks a bunch.

Hi Julie

You still can download all those project sam freebies.
They are all there in Giga format but EXS will convert
them automatically as you might know.
Should that not work let me know, I might be able to
send them over.
I hope that helped for now

Julie... I use LaCie drives...a 350G D2 for samples. I stick to FW800 on my
 PowerBook G4 although the D2 has FW400 & USB2 connections. USB2 is supposed to
be just as fast but just doesn¹t seem to cut it for me. Only the ³17 MacBook
Pro currently has FW800...worth it to me when I¹m ready for a new laptop.

Can¹t help with Project Sam samples.

Peace!

Craig

I've used a lot of drives. The major ones are all pretty much the
same - made by only a few manufacturers - the differences are mostly
in the cases, interfaces, warranty and service.

The ones I currently like best are the LaCie d2 Extreme triple
interface (FW400/FW800/USB 2.0). One I opened up had a Maxtor drive
inside - but the drive manufacturer could vary, that's not part of
the specs.

They are available from maczone.com and compusa.com at good prices.

You can get Maxtor triple interface drives for similar cost - those
are OK too - though LaCie's tech support is easier to contact.

FW800 is not becoming obsolete, but it seems to be remaining a niche
interface only used for high-end pro audio or video. The new mac pro
quadcore desktops still have FW800 ports. You don't really need
FW800 unless you're doing intense projects, but it's good to have the
option which is why I recommend the triple interface drives.

As far as recovering your files - did the disk stop spinning or is it
just not mounting. If it still spins, you might be able to recover
your files with Data Rescue II, available here: http://
www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue_info.php

I had a drive go down completely last year - I had backups, but a
few important files were not in the backups. The drive would not
mount and could not be fixed by TechTool, Disk Utility or Disk
Warrior. With Data Rescue II, I was able to recover almost every file.

Good luck!

- Dave

downloads.... Do you know the link?

Thanks so much.

Dave and Craig,
Thanks for the info. I get a fair number of overrun messages in fat
musical passages. FW800 might help with that.

As for the lost drive.... it won't spin up. We tried putting it an a
couple of other housings. No luck. So....for now....I just keep
popping those CD's/DVD's in the computer.

thanks much,
julie

And the new iMac, surprisingly. It does not belong to this thread but
I would like to mention it: the new 24" dual Intel iMac has Firewire
400 and 800 and Gigabit Ethernet. If these machines don't get hot and
loud like many of the G5 iMacs they are perfect for a lot of
environments. Big screens, iCam, Logic node farm etc.

Julie,
You are welcome...wish we could have been of more help.
Got to ditto on Data Rescue...it¹s the bomb! Saved my butt once, but if your
drive won¹t even spin up...

Hi Julie,

Other folks have spoken well about the LaCie D2 drives - I have had
repeated problems with the D2 250 Gb drives (one just died recently,
and one a while back).

I have now chosen a completely different route: External SATA drives
= Serial ATA, same as your internal drives.
I bought a housing from Sonnet which holds 4 drives of your choice. I
have 4 x 400 GB in there, more than enough for my samples plus
backups of my main drives. The box interfaces with my G5 via a PCI
card and 4 cables. The drives are hot-swappable which allows for even
more possibilities: I can use some of my old "small" 160GB drives for
storing backups, movies, etc.

I must say that (so far...) this is working really well, with none of
the problems of firewire drives that I had experienced before. The
data transfer rate is very high and having the "extra" drives to use
for backups is great - 10 times faster than writing to DVD or DVD-RAM.

It's another option.....

Regards - Colin

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
