9 simple Waveform Patches

2002-07-17 by Sascha Franck

Puhh - finally my mailserver doesn't seem to block everything going to
@yahoogroups.com anymore.
My apologies for the multiple testmails, I hope that won't happen again.

Anyways, here's 9 patches all using very simple waveforms. They should serve
fine as the basis for some more advanced patches.
Tip: Open two EXS's, load two different of those simple patches into each of
them, edit them, CTRL+A, CTRL+C in the source patch and CTRL+V in the target
patch to quickly layer them. And remember to check out the "move zones incl.
root" keycommand to create quick octaved (or fifth'ed or whatever) layers.
You may note that I did almost nothing to the ADSR, the only thing I did was
roughly adjusting the filter (per default it's off in all those patches
though).
Even if they use keyboard mappings (octaves or tritones), all together these
patches are 85KB only.

Hi Jer,

> What was the source for these waveforms?

Various softsynths and WaveLab, all depending on how good they were doing
the job. I was a bit astonished about how much aliased some of the VSTi's
bounces were, almost completely unusable when stripped down to single
waveforms. Actually not even WaveLab's signal generator does the job that
well, you loop one single waveform of a longer file and it's outta tune,
then you loop another one and again it's outta tune, just in a different
way - weird!

I wonder if there's one *really* good signal generator out somewhere, such a
thing would be perfect for basic patches.
If any of you Windows users knows of one, let me know!

Regards,
Sascha

[Note: this is a resend - there's a possibility that the old version arrives
as well. Apparently my provider's mailserver was abused for spam mails and
blocked by Yahoo - so they switched to another server requiring
authentification]

Rene's waveforms for Pentagon 1 -- look at the wavetables in an editor -- might
make a good source. They are alias free and there is a cycle for each midi note
(128 of them).

I would expect short wave samples to be out of tune due to sampling being based
discrete numbers of samples. So a 1kHz wave is really only 44 samples per
cycle if you are sampling at 44.1kHz. If you loop 44 samples you will get a
periodic function that is 0.2% too short. A 6%frequency change is a semitone
so you are likely to be something like 3 cent sharp on that example.

Better tuning would result from more cycles looped say 10 or more at higher
frequencies -- pitch errors are smaller for bass notes of course since they
will contain more samples per cycle.

Murray

Tried them allready - not a bad source, but I had problems tuning some of
them though, for *whatever* reasons. I might give them another try though.

Yeah, I allready suspected something similar like that. But WaveLab seems to
be somewhat *more* inaccurate.

Of course.

They are coming with rcgaudio's (kickass!) "Pentagon 1" synth and serve as
additional "wavetables". Unfortunately that one is PC only.
I don't think Ren\ufffd would be too happy if one would post these, but I may ask
him.

Sascha

Where might one find these?

Ah, I see.

What about Csound?

Hm, is that any easy to handle? From what I've seen in the past (admittedly
not much) there were no proper frontends and such, it all seemed to be more
like a "programming geeks" thing to me. But I may be totally wrong. Could
you point me to a good starting page or so?
Seriously, all I want is a signal generator, allowing for the creation of
"clean" waveforms of all sorts - simple ones and eventually mixed/modulated
ones.
Hm, maybe I should just try MDA's drumsynth or Stomper again...

Sascha

I think there are some front ends, but I haven't looked into it.

Yeah, it still is. :-(

I learned just enough of it to create stereo sine waves at particular
frequencies (for brainwave entrainment), so it's now ridiculously easy
for me to create, for example, a 30 minute file with a 200Hz sine wave
in the left channel, a 208Hz sine wave in the right, with a 4 second
fade-in and 60 second fade-out. Setting the frequencies and times is
done in a simple text editor. :-)

AFAIK Csound would do that easily (and MUCH more, of course...)

I think sine waves are done with a built-in function generator. If you
like I'll try to suss out what other waveforms it does...

Erm... been there - that's all looking like chinese to me :-)

Someone just made the suggestion to use N.I.'s free SoundForum synth - will
try that right now. I guess I will have an easier time to figure out some
internal soundcard rerouting (for lossless recording of that thing) than
getting started with Csound. But I will eventually take that into
consideration later on.

Sascha
