Indeed not much of a speed jump... and the Dual 1GHz still is a bit
pricey...

Cheers,

On the processor front, maybe, but they use DDR RAM, now! Also, the system
bus speed has been bumped up from 133MHz to 167MHz. Surely these two facts
alone should offer a significant increase in performance, and probably in
the areas that us users of audio instruments and other plugins need it most!
PCI speed is still 33MHz, however.

Well, arguable - At the cheap end of the wedge (what I've just ordered) the
standard model has gone from 800MHz G4 to Dual 867MHz G4. Also on the next
two models up the FSB is now 166MHz which should provide a noticable boost.
As for now having 333 DDR across the range I'm undecided as to whether it
will provide much of a boost or not. Watch this space - I'll report back when

the box arrives!

Who is finally getting new hardware to replace his G3 and gloating over his
discount ;-)

How so? The increase in FSB speed of 25% is surely less of a boost to memory
performance than the 100% increase in bandwidth at a given bus speed when you
move from SDRAM to DDR SDRAM.

This improvement in memory spec should boost plugin instances considerably --
eg number of compressors/ Plat verbs /VST synths you can run. G4s have been
hobbled until now by two years out of date memory bandwidth. The Intel 845
chipsets which were released last year for the low end P4/Celeron absolutely
sucked compared to the 845 DDR chipsets that replaced them soon after. The bus
speed on both versions of i845 was the same just 266 MHz DDR instead of PC133
SDRAM.

Murray

Timely release, given Logic 5.2's capacity to run up to 64 audio
instruments! :-))

This may have been mentioned before, but the new G4s come with OSX
only. There is no way to run Logic 5.2 on them without an OS9 install
(at this time). Emapple? Enjoy...

That's the obvious reason why EMagic needs to port/upgrade Logic over to
OSX.....I am sure I am not the only one here whose only application that
remains OS9 only is Logic. If it weren't for that I would have wiped OS9
completely.

At this point, I would love to hear from any of those buying the new DDR
RAM/Dbl CPU Macs just how much better Plugins (especially huge hogs like
Steinberg's "The Grand") are running on the new machines.

-Marshall (stating the obvious)

Actually, not true. They come preinstalled with OS10.2 and OS9.2.2 but
default booting into 10.2 when shipped. I have confirmed this to be true
when I ordered mine.

That's true. It's rumoured that Apple will be ditching OS 9 as of January,
2003, and that these machines will NOT be able to boot OS 9. It is this
rumour that leads me to believe that logic for Mac OS X will be released at
the same time. Apple is painfully aware of the slow release flow of OS X
music apps and they know they can't cut the OS 9 cord until at least Logic
is running on X.

BTW, the rumour about Apple dropping OS 9 also included the belief that it
will still launch OS 9 in emulation (or "Classic mode")

BS: In my opinion.

To clarify, I can't believe Apple would make OS9 unbootable. That's what I
don't believe.

Upon reviewing Apple's site, it states that all three builds offer OSX+ or
OS9+.
