VSTi Drum Machines vs. EXS24

VSTi Drum Machines vs. EXS24

2002-08-15 by Martin, Jeremy

Heya guys

I was just wondering what the whole point of Battery, DR 008, LM, Waldorf
Attack, LM4 mk II, etc was. What's the advantage of using a VSTi drum
machine instead of EXS24? Can't you get the same level of programming by
just setting all the drum sounds to "one shot" and using the Matrix editor?
I think I read that Attack synthesizes some of the drum sounds itself but I
don't think the others do that.... Anyone have a reason *not* to just use
EXS24 for all drum programming?

Cheers
Jeremy

I use DR-008 which is great. It is low on CPU and it has synthesis
features. Sort of a cross between Attack and Battery, only better
than both IMO. I havent done any comparisons against EXS and dont
know if theres any difference in CPU usage. I use it mainly for
synth drum sounds but it´s features and semimodular design goes far
beyond that.

For me, Battery is much easier to quikly load sounds into and
trigger them than EXS24, I mostly use EXS24 for my
preformatted libraries.

Battery is great for quickly loading one shot samples, and being
able to shape them with its built in bit depth cruncher, volume
envelope shapers, and maximizer..........plus quickly being able to
change the start and stop time of a sample and reverse it, and
trigger multiple snares, all directly from the front panel.....

Quite nice in my opinion, the Waldorf Attack is a drum
synthesizer, so it makes it own unique noises........
