Translator(Mac) distorting samples from Roland to EXS format

Translator(Mac) distorting samples from Roland to EXS format

2002-11-22 by dangcookie

I just ran Translator for the first time on my Mac and tried to
translate a bunch of Roland libraries. Translator has pushed all of
the samples past the digital threshold into complete digital
distortion right up until the fade of the sample. Does anyone know
what I could be doing wrong? I have set Translator to apply its pre-
emphasis killing filter, which is default, and frankly what I
prefer. I've also been translating everything at the Patch level,
which would make the most sense, right? I basically highlight the
patches I want to translate, then hit the Start Translation button,
which brings me to a window where I select the destination format,
which I choose to be EXS, and hit ok.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
David

I don't know what build you are using, but that was resolved awhile ago,
one CD build did that sometimes on mono or stereo samples, I forgot which.
It wasn't the filter really that was doing it, it was something else.

I'll send you a temporary build that has new features on it, to make sure
you're issue is resolved.

Most of the time you should translate Patches, that's the most common
"Instrument Unit" in the Roland. However, sometimes those cheesy wacky
Roland programmers (Hi Eric) used Performances to put together an
"Instrument Unit" - drums are a good example. Translator will automatically
put all that together. Best suggestion is to study the liner notes of the
CD and see how they are laid out, and go from there.

Hi Garth,
That solved the problem. I failed to get the latest build. Sounds
great now. Thank you! Translator is the great program that I knew
on the PC. :-) However, I've got my fingers crossed that
Chickensys will expand their supported sampler formats soon, as they
have on the PC.

I'm still confused by the example screen shots posted on the
Chickensys site for the Mac. I've not seen them in Translator. You
know, the separate source and destination windows? Just curious
where those are in the program.

One more big question: now that Emagic has released the great new
features of the EXS24, should I wait to transfer over some of the
Roland and Kurzweil libraries until Chickensys has had the chance to
map the new EXS features into the translation? What is the best way
to prepare for future upgrades to the EXS24 with respect to my
libraries in other formats that I wish to translate?

Thanks again,
David

I'll respond privately, thanks. The palette will be expanded, yes.
