Re: [LUG] [GEN] EXS Sampling

The song you're talking about is just some template to let you record the samples. However, it does not cut them, name them properly and adjust any loop points. I'm using such a template song as well, containing sequences playing the instrument in question in: - Octaves, from C0 to C7 - Tritones, from C0... - Major thirds... - Minor thirds... - Diatonic seconds in C... - Chromatic... (especially useful when sampling drum machines) Those are all playing back at Velocity = 127. Then I have the same sequences again, this time playing at more than one velocity: - 65 + 127 - 45 + 85 + 127 - 35 + 65 + 95 + 127 Depending on the attack/decay/release time of the instrument in question I just lower or raise the tempo. Obviously it's not that hard to do yourself such a template song. Anyways, as said, you still need to do yourself all the cutting (just using "strip silence" and "convert regions into individual audiofiles" still won't name them properly, let alone the fact that strip silence isn't exactly working too well on low levels). Then: if you plan to sample some VST instruments, there's a great little program called "Chainer". Originally planned to be a VST standalone host (which it actually does quite well) and a VST plugin, "chaining" VST instruments and plugins, it can also be used to sample VST instruments and FX in standalone mode (for obvious reasons this won't work for Emagic's instruments, too bad... the blessings of proprietary "standards"...). You can just setup a combination of VST instruments and effects, tweak to your likings (it even includes a randomizing function) and then use some export function. In that dialog you will be able to set the number (and notes) of the keys you want to be exported and name the exported file properly. Folliwing the number of keys you assigned, it will then render some wavefiles with appropriate note number additions (such as "FM7_FatPad_C0) which the EXS could then automap properly. Of course, if you need looped samples, you will still have to do that yourself, either straight in the EXS or in some proper audio editor, but if you set the threshold to a high value, this might eventually not be required - sure, the files are getting larger, but in times of large HDDs one could just ignore that. The nice thing about "Chainer" is that you can actually run a layer of VST instruments in combination with all sorts of VST effects and then render everything down. In case you have a multiclient soundcard or an additional card for MME purposes only, you can even keep Logic and "Chainer" opened simultaneously. Just give it a try: www.xlutop.com (the demo won't save any presets, but the export function will work just nicely) Regards, Sascha
