Isolating instruments from audio recording

If you have recorded some material from a CD, is it possible to isolate the instruments used? The manual says you can use a noise gate, but it doesn't seem to work when more than one instrument sounds at the same time - for example a bass and a bassdrum. Best regards, Henrik Jensen
