Majestic/Culture: Xfading + V. switching in EXS24 Mk II

Majestic/Culture: Xfading + V. switching in EXS24 Mk II

2003-01-06 by Murray McDowall

I have been building some instruments out of the audio files that are in
the Culture Tryout and the Majestic Tryout at Yellow tools. If anyone is
interested I can post the EXS files.

The Majestic audio files are electric bass samples with 8 way velocity
switching and two samples at each velocity -- sounds to me like two
separate pickups on the same bass.

I can set up 8 way velocity switching with additional modwheel switching
between [bridge pickup/bridge and front/ front pickup] but it seems you
can't have velocity switching_AND_ crossfading between the modwheel levels
(to get a progressive blend of the pickups at constant volume)
simultaneously. This does not seem to work even if you program the velocity
ranges into the individual samples. Perhaps there is a workaround I have
missed? You can of course blend the pickups externally by using multiple
outputs --eg send all bridge samples to a different output to all the front
samples.

Another limitation is that the EXS 24 seems to stop working properly if the
number of zones exceeds 500 or so -- pasting in more zones for another
articulation does not work past a certain point.

I have built some EXS24 instruments with the Culture Tryout audio files
too. A Shaker, a huge Tambourine (16 way velocity switching and four
different sounds) and a Surdo too.

I haven't programmed the djembe though. Perhaps if someone else has done
it/ would like to do it (it is pretty huge -- to get the files you need to
download the Culture Tryout demo from the yellowtools site:
http://www.yellowtools.com/index2_e.htm -- in the products area) they
could send the exs file to me and I will put the whole lot up on the exs
files area.

Murray

Hey Murray,

I'm interested....

I would say, finish em' up the best you can and then upload them to the
FILES section of this list... Make sure you include a detailed .TXT
file breaking down "what's going on" and what you did...

Thanks again!!!!!!

I'd love to try out these instruments. A friend of mine (with high speed ISP) just downloaded the samples for me yesterday. I haven't even looked at them yet; so your offer comes at just the right time (for me anyway!). Thanks.

Hi to Chris M and Eli K,

I will put a bunch of instruments up on Yahoo for the Majestic samples in a
few minutes.

The Majestic tryout is a large set of Elec Bass samples. It includes three
articulations: long, short and ghost + a dozen slide samples.

Each articulation has about 170 odd samples. I wanted to build Ein
Uber-Instrument out of all of them together but the EXS24 mkII chokes on
that many samples. So what I have done is build several with a max of two
articulations per instrument eg Long + Ghost, Short + Ghost, Long+ short.
With the combo instruments I have used key switching ( C0 and D0 mostly) to
switch between articulations and the Modwheel to move between back, back
and front, and front pickup.

Some patches are set as unison mode -- if you don't like that turn it off.

Any takers for the djembe project?-- the mapping of the samples used by
Yellowtools is up on their site -- I would follow that mapping exactly if I
were building it but I want a break from editing instruments after what I
have done already.

Regards,
Murray
