Audio files from DiO to DAE?

Audio files from DiO to DAE?

2003-01-26 by Renger Koning

Hi,

Tried to transfer a complete song from DiO to DAE with ESB and DTDM.
All the instruments transfer perfect, but I have a problem with the
audio files.
When I set the track from DiO to DAE I loose my settings (panning etc.)
and the track jumps to mono!
After switching them to stereo, I only hear 1 side!! And I just can't
find the solution!
Has anyone of you got a tip how to make a smooth transfer for audio
files from DiO to DAE?

thanx Renger

Hi, I had a similar problem switching from ASIO. Try loading the song by
double clicking it - Logic asks if you want to convert the song to DAE (this
can be hit n miss for me, perhaps someone knows a way so logic does this
everytime?...). This gets your pans and plugins (if compatible). On the
playing stereo files front this works for me although the prob sounds a tad
different. Load up the song. Double click audio file. Select "Save
selection As..." from the file menu. Resave as a split stereo file and
import in place of the original file.

Hope this helps

RnB'ish Horn Samples?

2003-01-26 by Shane Fawkes

Hello all,

I¹m looking for some feedback/suggestions for some horn CD¹s. I like the
style of both Ilio/Spectrasonics ŒMemphis Horns¹ and Best Service¹s ŒKiller
Horns 2¹ demos. I know both are phrase based, but I would also want single
note/articulation samples as well; my understanding is that Killer Horns 2
includes them, but Memphis Horns does not. Unfortunately, I¹ve only seen KH2
listed as an audio CD, is it available in Akai 1000 (or heaven forbid,
native EXS24)? Oh yes, I almost forgot, how complete is the repackaged
multi-format Phantom Horns, and/or how completely have people found the giga
version to translate within EXS?

Any insights on either (or alternative) discs would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

    Shane

I've heard that Sam Horns are excellent several times on this list.

MBCamp,

SAM Horns are great, no doubt, but they have little to do with R n' B!!!
They're French Horns, and are aimed at orchestral writing.

Shane,

Quantum Leap Brass, on the other hand, features many more brass
instruments, and many articulations. No licks there however, only single
hits. I own Killer Horns 1 and it is quite good. It's a mixed cd-rom,
however, meaning that part of the material is audio only and part is AKAI,
which makes things a little confusing. It's a good deal for the buck and
the sound is good, although the collection is quite a bit old now. This
translates into pretty short samples. Memphis Horns may be your best bet.

Yeah, I figured I was out of my league on that one since I've never heard
them. Funny no one every mentioned that before (that I can recall). Anyway,
I'm interested in what you find out. -Jer

I thought Sam Horns (& Tbn) were more orchestral in function; I¹ll go back
and check it out. Thanks.

Hi Shane,

I know this isn't directly about the CDs you were asking about, but I was at a client's place a few days ago doing some work for her and she had a CD called Brass Super Section in Akai format. She has a Gigiastudio setup and had it in there. But I converted it into her EXS 24 through the vanilla Emagic conversion (in Logic 5.2) to try it out. Some of the sounds are very nice, some are pretty good and some are really nothing I would want to use (like any sample CD I guess).

The section and solo single shot multisamples were pretty good on each of the saxes, trumpets, and trombones. The short shots (also with falls which were very nice) were all very good. The legato multisamples were mixed. Some of the saxes were nice. The trombones and trumpets were pretty good. And there were some very nice muted trumpet mustisamples too, both legato and stacatto. It's not a "modern" CD rom, in that the samples aren't particularly big. It's from that generation of CDs designed for 32 meg samplers. But they're still for the most part very musical and fun to play on.

But what realy bugged me was the conversion. There was a lot of latency in triggering many of the samples. When I went into the sample editor I of course saw silence at the beginning of the files which was the cause. So it seems it didn't convert the sample start points very well. Yes you could go in and manually fix the start points of the problem multisamples, but it's a lot of work.

Same thing at the ends of the samples. Some had bad clicks and noise at the end. A quick look in the sample editor revealed lots of empty space at the end. So it was easily remedied by moving the end anchor in, but it's a drag (pun intended).

I'm going back to her place tomorrow night to do some work and will check it out in her Giga setup to see if Giga converted it any better. I'm curious.

Aside from the sample start/end problems, I'd pick up this CD Rom if I could get it at a good price. Seeing as how it's a "last generation" type of rom, maybe the price isn't too high for it; I don't know.

Thanks Eli,

Any other title selections are more than welcome; those are just a couple of
the ones I¹m aware of. If you get a chance to further investigate the Brass
Super Section I¹d appreciate any further comments.

Sam Horns Is excellent but is only a French Horn section (Classical and Film
Score type of sounds ) you'll find very good sounds and Fxs, but no phrased
sound.
